The performance of new compact premium Verano from Buick got a major boost with the arrival of the new Verano Turbo for 2013, featuring a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection 4-cylinder engine that generates 250 hp. Full power can be accessed at only 5300 rpm. Meanwhile, 260 lb-ft of torque can be achieved at only 2000 rpm. Another impressive thing is that 234 lb-ft of power is available from 1700 to 5500 rpm. As a result, it can accelerate from zero to 60mph in just 6.2 seconds. Notably, the Verano would perform well regardless of the gear being used. It’s interesting that its closest rival, the Acura ILX2.4, delivers only 200 hp but it does weigh significantly lower.
The Buick Regal Turbo uses the same engine. This is where it received recognition as one of Wards Auto 10 Best Engines list for 2012. Amy Joss, Ecotec 2.0L assistant chief engineer, said that the 2.0L turbo engine was intended for refinement, superior output capabilities and less noise. She said that the Verano has the features of a “luxury sedan with a fun side.”
Buick is making this engine available either mated to a six-speed manual or automatic amid efforts by the automaker to appeal to enthusiasts by offering manual transmissions. Tony DiSalle, vice president of Buick Marketing, said that “intelligent performance” continues to drive Buick’s engine strategy. He said that for the current market, the solutions include four-cylinder engines, turbocharging and eAssist. He explained further that with sophisticated technologies, Buick models become more efficient but continue to have a “smooth, quiet character.” Buick still has to determine whether the Verano could be offered with an eAssist hybrid variant but with the impending arrival of the ILX Hybrid, it appears likely.
