Mercedes-Benz has launched its sixth-generation SL roadster at the Detroit Auto Show. The 2013 SL comes with a new, all-aluminum body shell, and weighs 275 pounds less than the current vehicle. It will be available for sale next spring. A new direct-injection V-8 engine will provide power to the SL550, which will feature two new technologies. One of these technologies is the Magic Vision Control windshield wiper and washer, which brings water to the windshield and eliminates splash.
This technology also makes it less likely that washer fluid will get into the passenger compartment when the roof is down. The wiper blade is heated. The second technology equipped in the vehicle is the FrontBass system, which utilizes the vehicle structure's free spaces ahead of the foot wells as resonance chambers for the woofer speaker system. In this way, the sound from the audio system is improved whether the top is down or up. Space in the doors and interior is also freed up.
The SL roadster is one of three refreshed or redesigned Mercedes models that are planned for launch next year. It comes with the all-aluminum bodyshell in a series-production model. Only very few components are made from other materials.
The 2013 SL550 has a new 4.6-liter V8 engine (SL550), which delivers 429 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque and complemented a 7-Speed Driver-Adaptive automatic transmission. With these statistics, the vehicle can hit 60 mph in only 4.5 seconds. It has a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph or 250 km/h. The design of the vehicle is completely new. While the front end features a big grille like the SLS AMG, the back of the vehicle takes inspiration from the CLS.
