The new Nissan Pathfinder will receive a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, Nissan officials told Motor Trend. This new model will make its debut this April at the New York Auto Show. When the new Pathfinder was unveiled in Detroit, it was considered to still be a concept since it didn’t have an interior. But a production version is set to make its debut in Chicago. As it was still a concept, Nissan won’t reveal any particular details about the new, unibody, front-wheel drive-based Pathfinder aside from the fact that it will be launched with a V-6 engine, continuously variable transmission as well as intelligent all-wheel drive.
A Nissan insider said that the Pathfinder will be powered by the automaker’s proven 3.5-liter V-6. It’s believed that this is the case for the new Pathfinder that is Nissan’s version of the new Infiniti JX35, which features the same powertrain. Nissan could still retune the engine for the Pathfinder but it will probably have the same 265hp and 248 pound-feet of torque as the JX.
But for now, the V-6 seems to be the only engine option. Nissan will use its new second-generation CVT, which is launched in the JX, and seems to be the only transmission option. Power is distributed to all four wheels through an intelligent all-wheel drive system that Nissan says, could be locked in full four-wheel drive (with maximum power to all wheels) to achieve more serious off-roading. Nissan has been saying that the Pathfinder is all-wheel drive but officials said that it comes with a selectable two-wheel drive mode that powers the front wheels just for minimal power loss and optimum fuel efficiency. The new Pathfinder will get as much as a 25% higher fuel economy than the existing V-6 models due largely to the new powertrain, improved aerodynamic body, and a curb weight that’s lighter by 500 pounds.
