2013 Volvo S60 Polestar

Production of a 500bhp, Polestar-developed version of the Volvo S60 will soon start, according to insiders. Spy shots were taken of the new model in Sweden for the first time last week. It’s also believed to be close to a market launch. Its development was handled by the team behind Volvo’s Swedish Touring Car Championship entry. Sources said its power exceeds that of the BMW M3 but have given no further details. It isn’t likely that the six-cylinder engine won’t be stretched to get to this figure so power is likely to generate from a turbocharged version of the 4.4-litre Yamaha V8 used in the XC90 and in the Noble M600, according to Autocar. It’s also likely to be equipped with a Haldex all-wheel drive system, together with a couple of clever differentials used on the C30 Polestar concept. In the spy photos, Polestar’s bodywork revisions are masked but they’re likely to feature a bolder front end with more engine cooling plus wider sills and a diffuser at the rear. These spy pictures also don’t display the new, larger alloy wheels. Performance upgrades are offered by Polestar for different Volvo models but it hasn’t made a full-blown Volvo production car in the past. Even when the Polestar C30, with a 400bhp 2.5-litre, five-pot engine, got good reviews and feedback, it has never gotten the green light.
