BMW is currently preparing for its X line of crossovers and SUV to undergo a total makeover. They will be arriving either as totally new models or facelifts within the next two years. The success of the original X5 had taken the automaker by surprise. Of the five SAVs that will arrive, the most important is the X5, from which a new generation will debut, the F15. It will come in 2013 or later to replace the E70, a model that had its launch in 2006 and that had gotten a facelift in February 2010.
The new generation is focused on lightness. It’s believed that the off-roaders of the Audi and Land Rover will shed hundreds of kilos. The first generation X5 model that had its launch in 1999 as a 2000 model had borrowed its technology from the Range Rover, such as with the hill-descent control system and the two-piece tailgate design.
However, the existing generation has all the new platform with revised suspension and an enhanced xDrive all-wheel-drive technology. After using plenty of aluminum and smaller, turbocharged engine to reduce weight and enhance the fuel economy, it’s possible that the F15 generation of BMW X5 will have some changes in its proportions too. XL5 is probably the name for a long wheelbase version that is in development. This may be the answer to the Q7 rather than the rumored X7. The X5 name is the oldest in the business and is believed to be more marketable than the X7 being rumored.
