Aside from reports that the SRT Barracuda will be offered alongside the present Dodge Challenger, we’ve also learned that the 2015 SRT Barracuda will use a totally new platform. In consideration of the Dodge Challenger’s weight and size, Chrysler has chosen to develop the new Barracuda on a smaller platform so that it could be more of a global model. Because of the Fiat-Chrysler relationship, the U.S. automaker aims to export its existing Challenger model but treats its size as an obstacle. A shorter and lighter Barracuda makes plenty of sense due to the increasing awareness of fuel economy as a primary purchasing factor in other markets. It’s expected that the 2015 SRT Barracuda will have a similar size as the present Ford Mustang, being shorter by over six inches compared to the existing Challenger’s wheelbase. Its overall length would be shorter by eight inches while the rear track and overall width would shrink by slightly over 2 inches. In addition, the Barracuda will be nearly 300 lbs lighter than the Challenger, which means that a four-cylinder may be feasible. If there is significant weight loss, it may be equipped with a new 2.4-liter Tigershark inline-four with a type of forced induction to make the SRT name a good fit.
