2011 Chevrolet Volt

A source told favstocks.com that a much cheaper variant of the Chevrolet Volt is possible. Reportedly, both Chevrolet and GM have the technologies required for a new Volt to be priced about $10,000 lower than the current generation. The Chevrolet Volt has received criticism for being too expensive for the key attributes that it offers. Even American quality watchdog Consumer Reports regards GM's new star model to be a car that makes no sense.

The source also said that the lower price might be achieved by re-engineering the Volt and building more units to make it cost less (taking an example from Ford marketing). Consumer Reports said that that after its crew tested the Volt, it came to conclude that it doesn’t make sense in terms of fuel consumption and price, especially when compared to the Prius. The plug-in hybrid has an all-electric range of 29 to 33 miles on average, and it can go as high as 40 miles when the weather is moderate.

GM even claims to have a range of more than 40 miles in electric mode. However, Consumer Reports only recorded a range of 25 to 27 miles in electric mode. As a result, it came to a conclusion that the Prius is a better choice than the Volt. David Champion, the senior director of Consumer Reports auto testing center, said that in driving about 70 miles, a Prius offers more miles per gallon than the Volt does.
