A sports car with a fuel-efficient engine That is how Ford Motor Co. describes the 2011 Mustang in its upcoming advertising campaign. Needless to say, this is not the usual pitch for a sports car but Ford seeks to attract customers who normally buy import brands. Amy Marentic, Ford's group marketing manager for North American cars and crossovers, said that the company knows who its enthusiasts are for its V-8 customers but it wants to appeal to new customers as well.
According to Edmunds, 53% of V-6 Mustang buyers traded in a vehicle from another make last month. This May, Ford will be showing one 30-second TV spot that has a clear message: fuel economy. The new aluminum V-6 engine delivers 305 hp and gets an estimated 31 mpg on the highway. The cast-iron 4.0-liter V-6 in the 2010 Mustang generates 210 hp and gets 24 mpg on the highway. Ford will also use social media and female bloggers to publicize the new V-6 engine. Marentic says that those who want a powerful car would also be thinking about fuel economy.
