Opel announced that Alain Visser, its sales and marketing chief, was promoted to Chevrolet's global marketing vice president. In a statement, Opel said that Visser will be handling the marketing of Chevrolet in all markets outside North and South America. He will be tasked with determining Chevrolet's brand differentiation strategy. He will supervise marketing strategies and will seek the improved alignment in Chevrolet's markets outside America. Visser was with Opel for eight years. Opel CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke expressed thanks to Visser for his "extraordinary contribution" and for having facilitated Opel’s repositioning.
Stracke also credited Visser for “substantially” improving the brand’s image. Visser’s new assignment takes effect on March 1. He will report to Joel Ewanick, the chief marketing officer of General Motors Co. Visser, originally from Belgium, began his automotive career in 1987 with Ford in Belgium. He joined Opel in 2004 and was named to the brand's management board in 2006.
Visser’s promotion is the third change in Opel’s management during the past two weeks. On April 1, Thomas Sedran was named to the recently created management as head of operations, business development and corporate strategy. On February 1, GM's China communications boss Johan Willems joined the Opel management board as the head of communications. To reverse its losses, it’s believed that Opel will implement a major new restructuring program. It’s estimated that GM will report a loss of over $300 million for Opel, its Germany-based unit, next week.
