Alfa Romeo 4C Concept

Alfa Romeo's 4C sports car will appear in prototype form sometime in the middle of 2012 before it becomes available for public in 2013, Fiat engineering chief Mauro Pierallini said.  Although the 4C’s central tub, chassis and aerodynamic design was done by Dallara Automibili, its development was continued by Pierallini and his team.

The car will have a curb weight of around 1,980 lbs, mainly due to extensive use of lightweight material like aluminum. The car’s frame is made from sheet-molded composites. Its 1.8-liter direct injection engine is made from aluminum, saving 55 lbs. The engine is expected to provide 4C with around 230 bhp, resulting to a 0-60 mph acceleration time of less than 4.5 seconds.

The car also enjoys positive aerodynamic downforce, thanks to Dallara’s wind-tunnel work. Alfa Romeo plans to produce 18,000 4Cs over the car’s lifetime, according to Pierallini. The 4C is expected to cost around $45,000 or less in the U.S.
