Alfa Romeo Giulia: first details revealed

2011 Alfa Romeo 159
Replacing the Alfa Romeo 159 is the all-new model, Giulia. Expect the Giulia, which is seen here in its conceptual illustration, to arrive within the next two years. The new model will be based on a new platform developed by Fiat Auto called the C-Evoluzione (C-Evo), which underpins the Bravo. The platform, which improves handling and ride comfort, is characterized by a longer wheelbase, shorter overhangs and more sophisticated suspension that enable it to be used in more expensive and upmarket cars than the Bravo. Engineered to be extremely adaptable, the C-platform can be used in multiple new cars with various mechanical configurations.
Entry-level Giulias will be front-wheel drive, with the option of Alfa's Q4 four-wheel drive system. You can also opt for Active Roll Control. Available in three different modes is Alfa's new DNA system (introduced in the Mito) that affect throttle response, traction control and steering weight.
The 159 has been reaping praises for its aesthetics; however, it has had its share of criticism, mostly for its excessive weight. Alfa will be working to ensure the Giulia's lengthened C-Evo platform is not hampered by the mass that afflicted the 159's Premium base, which is often described as being over-engineered. The Milano, which was revealed in spy shots last week, will be officially unveiled at the Geneva motor show next March, with sales starting in the summer. The Giulia will surface towards the end of 2011, although sales may not start in the UK until 2012.
