Alfa Romeo MiTo not coming to the U.S.

2011 Alfa Romeo MiTo TCT

Alfa Romeo will be returning to the US market but it won't be bringing its ultra stylish MiTo hatch. Instead, Alfa Romeo will be focusing on larger cars such as the upcoming Milano model, a mid-sized five-door hatch. Alfa Romeo CEO Sergio Cravero said that since the current US market is not that open yet to small, luxury cars such as the MiTo, the estimated volume the MiTo will fetch in US (about 20,000 units a year) will be too low to make it viable for the company.

Aside from the Milano, no other models have been determined to be brought to the US. Partner Chrysler has yet to decide which platforms it will use for production in North America. Alfa Romeo's parent company, Fiat, and their recent alliance with Detroit-based Chrysler will see the American brand borrowing platforms from the Italian manufacturer.

Alfa Romeo's Milano model will serve as the underpinning for a future Chrysler sedan, but other models are still being decided upon by Fiat and Chrysler higher-ups.
