The new powerplant comes equipped with an electro-hydraulic valve control system that cuts fuel-consumption with its direct air control through the powerplant‚ suction valves, while the throttle is not utitilzed. In the same way, carbon dioxide levels are cut by the use of a more efficient combustion control. The carmaker claims that the technology can be adapted to any gasoline powerplant, with a development potential for diesel units also.
There will be three different power levels for the 1.4-liter unit, including 105bhp, 135bhp and 170bhp. Matching gearboxes include both five and six-speed. The top of the line 170bhp unit will only be offered for the Quadrifoglio Verde, a special edition Mito.
Included also in the MultiAir powerplant, which is a first in the Mito range, is a Start/Stop system. Currently in the works is a two-cylinder turbocharged MultiAir unti which is 20 percent lighter and has a 25 percent smaller footprint compared to a four-pot version but can still yield the same potency.
