Alfa Romeo MiTo to receive Fiat’s first dual-clutch transmission

Later this year Fiat will at last be debuting its first dual-clutch transmission which will be seen first in the Alfa Romeo MiTo. The fuel-saving gearbox is six-speed with a dry dual-clutch system that was developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT) and BorgWarner, who is in fact the supplier of the DualTronic transmission control system for the gearbox. This system will come in three variants under the C635 range. Each specific unit has been designed to meet different levels of torque and engine speed.
The DualTronic uses high pressure electro-hydraulic solenoids working in tandem with an on-demand electrically powered hydraulic pump to lower fuel usage. BorgWarner has been providing gearbox technology for Fiat more than a decade already.
Technologies in the past consisted with solenoids for Fiat's Selespeed and Freechoice automated manual transmissions. The current control module is derived on tested and proven solenoid designs created by BorgWarner's plant in Monaco which will also produce the same high pressure solenoids for the C635 transmission which will be offered next year. Fiat will bring the gearboxes to a boarder range of vehicles under the Fiat label, including the Lancia as well as the Alfa Romeo Guilia and the 159 sedan's next generation.
