Alfa Romeo to return to the United States by 2012

2010 Alfa Romeo BreraThings are once again looking up for Fiat S.p.A.'s plan to return Alfa Romeo to the US by 2012, according to a Chrysler Group spokesman who recently confirmed remarks made by CEO Sergio Marchionne last Friday. Marchionne had expressed his confidence that Alfa Romeo will reconstitute a product offering that is acceptable globally, and more in particular in the US and Canada. Press reports have talked about the brand being most likely to be back within the next two years. Alfa made its exit from the US in 1995 with a reputation for poor quality. Continued after the jump! About a decade ago, there were plans for a 2003 Alfa comeback as part of Fiat's alliance with General Motors. This partnership has long been dissolved. There were statements from various Fiat executives indicating a return but none have been realized. It is seen that last month's appointment of Harald Wester as Alfa‚ CEO is related to Marchionne's latest view. Wester is the fifth Alfa chief appointed by Marchionne during his six years at Fiat. Aside from being Alfa chief, Wester is also chief executive of Maserati and Abarth, as well as chief technical officer at Fiat S.p.A. and Fiat Group Automobiles S.p.A. Marchionne cited Wester‚ commitment and proven ability to ‚Äúbring strong leadership capabilities and solid technical experience and know-how‚Äù to a strategic review of Alfa. The review is set to be completed by April 21, when Fiat will unveil a plan for the group for the next four years. [via autonews - sub. required]
