The Coda electric sedan, which will be introduced to the US in mid-2010, will have its eGearDrive transmission supplied by BorgWarner Inc. Meanwhile, UQM Technologies Inc. will be supplying its PowerPhase 100 electric propulsion system.
Detroit-based BorgWarner initially plans to supply the transmissions from its factory in Longview, Texas, to an assembly plant in China, according to Erika Nielsen, a BorgWarner spokeswoman. She said that eventually BorgWarner may supply the transmissions from its factory in Beijing, as volumes and the business case warrant. Continued after the jump!
In July, BorgWarner's production will start, followed by Coda‚ production in August. Frederick, Colo.-based UQM said that it has entered a 10-year contract with Coda, with parts shipments to begin this year from UQM headquarters.
The contract requires that Coda purchase 20,000 propulsion systems in the first two years of production. Santa Monica, Calif.-based Coda was launched in June as an offshoot of Miles Electric Vehicles, which makes neighborhood electric vehicles for fleets. Chinese automaker Harbin Hafei Automotive will provide the chassis and conduct assembly at its plants in Harbin, China. Lithium ion battery packs will come from Chinese Tianjin Lishen Battery. The sedan is priced from $45,000.
