People who want to learn more about the automotive industry and its history can always head out to Germany. This is because not only is it where many of the world’s leading auto brands are based, but it is also where one can visit the best when it comes to museums decided to the automotive world.
With the opening of the Mazda Classic Car Museum by Auto Frey, it adds a new reason to visit Germany. Dedicated mainly to the Japanese automaker, it is also the first such collection of models to be displayed outside Japan. The museum is in Augsburg, Bavaria, and is seen as an excellent location as it is between Munich and Stuttgart. For the uninitiated, Munich is currently where BMW is headquartered with Stuttgart serving as the home not only of Porsche but even for Mercedes.
In addition, the location of the museum is about four hours from Oberursel, Augsburg, which is the same area where Mazda’s Research & Development center is based. Oberursel is also where you can find Auto Frey, which not only sells Peugeots but is considered to be the largest Mazda dealer in Europe. Augsburg is also five hours away from Leverkusen, where the European headquarters of Mazda is located. For the museum itself, it was made possible through a joint venture entered into by Mazda and the family that owns Auto Frey. In time for the official market launch of the new generation E63 and E63 S models, pricing for Mercedes-AMG’s E63 Estate Edition 1 has also been announced in Germany. Let’s just say the equivalent price in US dollars comes at approximately $152,575.
For starters, the standard E63 wagon boasts a 0-62 acceleration under 3.6 seconds and a top speed reaching 155mph (250 kilometers per hour). After its debut at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show, Volkswagen is now taking orders for the Arteon in Germany---where price starts at 49,325 euros. In this case, the new five-seater coupe comes out more expensive than Passat’s Highline trim level with the same 280hp 2.0-liter TSI engine. What makes Arteon more special though is that it exudes a certain character of the Sport Coupe Concept GTE that was showcased in Geneva in the last couple of years.
For one, Volkswagen wishes to place the new Arteon in the same league as that of BMW’s 4-Series Grand Coupe. Standing at 56.2 inches tall with width up to 73.7 inches and 191.4 inches in length, the Arteon basically replaces the former Volkswagen Passat CC. Because of this, the Arteon now features a sleeker body style, a superior legroom and longer wheelbase with up to 563-liter space at the trunk. When the seats are completely folded, the cargo capacity boasts up to 1,557-liters.
Among its other features are Volkswagen’s latest 9.2inches infotainment system with gesture control, head-up display and all-digital instrument cluster. When it was announced in January, the Opel Crossland X was seen as an actual rival to the Renault Captur and the Peugeot 2008. Yet, the Opel Crossland X (Vauxhall Crossland X for its United Kingdom-bound version) shares its underpinnings with the Peugeot 2008, thanks to a collaboration agreement inked between Opel and the PSA Group in 2012.

Following its global debut at the 2017 North American International Auto Show (2017 Detroit Auto Show) in January and its European unveiling at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show this month, the new Mercedes-Benz is now finally available to order, at least in its home market Germany. In fact, interested clients could now go Mercedes’ Web site and configure their own E Class according to their tastes and preferences.
As to how much the new Mercedes-Benz E Class Coupe would cost, the German premium carmaker has already provided a cheat list on the starting prices on each of the four models available at launch: the E200, the E220d, the E300, and the E400 4Matic. For those who have made their orders, they could expect to take deliveries of the latest iteration of the E Class Coupe as early as spring 2017.
The entry-level E200 derives its power from a 2.0-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine that could deliver up to 184 hp (135 kW) of output and up to 221 lb.-ft. (300 Nm) of torque. Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 2018 E Class Coupe (sold as 2017MY in Germany) at the 2017 North American International Auto Show (or 2017 Detroit Auto Show). Reports had been saying that Mercedes will commence sales of the E Class coupe in the first or second quarter of 2017. However, it turns out that Mercedes is already selling the 2018 E Class Coupe in its home market, Germany.
Those residing in Germany could now place their orders for the 2018 Mercedes E Class Coupe and get their premium two-door cars as early as March 2017. Buyers could have their own 2018 E Class at a starting price of €41,220 ($42,980) -- excluding taxes – for the entry-level E200.
2018 2-door E Class coupe is considered to be Mercedes’ answer to the BMW 4 Series and the Audi A5. It is heavily influenced by Mercedes’ “sensual purity” design, considering its fuller body, smoother shape and sloping roofline. The new E Class coupe is underpinned by Mercedes’ latest modular rear architecture (MRA platform). The race for delivering street-wise autonomous vehicles is heating up as Mercedes-Benz recently received permission from the German government to conduct on-the-road tests of its experimental units.
This isn’t the first time that Mercedes-Benz was granted permission to test its autonomous vehicles. However, the latest approval involves the next generation of the carmaker’s autonomous prototypes, now installed with its newest software dubbed as Daimler Autonomous Vehicle Operating System (DAVOS). These autonomous prototypes are derived from the Mercedes-Benz V-Class (Viano) mid-size passenger van. These test vehicles are fitted with advanced Lidar sensors to allow the DAVOS software to do its work. DAVOS employs a graphic processor and deep-learning technologies to perform as expected.
With these technical specs, these new autonomous prototypes should be able to theoretically operate by themselves. However, two specially trained drivers will be on board each test car for safety reasons. In a bid to acquire new production technologies and reduce per-vehicle manufacturing costs, Tesla has entered an agreement to purchase German firm Grohmann Engineering. Considered as one of the global leaders in highly automated manufacturing methods, Grohmann Engineering should allow Tesla to boost its manufacturing capability and know-how.
Tesla has acknowledged that only by having high-volume manufacturing sites will it be able to achieve a sustainable energy future. Such high-volume production facilities would enable Tesla to manufacture high-quality products with economies of scale, which means vehicles rolling off these sites would be more affordable and more accessible. In addition, Tesla considers such a high-volume factory as a product itself. Based in Prum, Germany, Grohmann Engineering would allow Tesla to get involved in high-volume highly automated manufacturing and make it possible for the California-based carmaker to realize its increased output target of 500,000 cars per year by 2018.
Tesla’s planned acquisition of Grohmann Engineering – led by founder and chief executive Klaus Grohmann -- includes the company’s development and production center in Germany, locations in Chandler, AZ, and Charlotte, NC, as well as a base in Shanghai, China. With the market of premium electric crossover continuing to expand, Mercedes-Benz revealed that it will soon be joining this segment as it had started the development of the production version for the Generation EQ Concept. Aimed to be released by the end of this decade, the task of building this version falls largely on the hands of its facility located in Bremen, Germany. Once released, Mercedes-Benz added that it will be the first of 10 electric models to be unveiled by 2025.
Since the actual production version of the company’s Generation EQ is more likely years away from being released, it comes as no surprise that Mercedes-Benz remains to be mum on some of the details behind it. The only thing that the company confirmed for now is that the upcoming model is likely to retain the crossover coupe styling of the concept car. However, Mercedes-Benz did promise that the range would likely reach 311 miles (500 km). This is assumed, of course, to be under the European testing cycle.
Still, that range is not likely to make this model the leader in its segment. The Tesla Model X P100D for instance, which is available already on the European market, can go, according to the Europe testing cycle, as far as 337 miles (542 km). Just recently, an accident happened at the Autobahn involving two private vehicles and two trucks – with one carrying seven Porsche Cayman GT4 units. The incident, which happened near Dortmund, Germany, has resulted to injuries both on the passengers and the vehicles.
According to reports, the transporter was hit from behind by another truck while traversing the Kamen area of Dortmund. The transporter was forced to break because of the traffic but the dutch lorry that was following it closely from behind failed to hit the breaks. The latter then crashed into the rear end of the transporter. To make things worse, another car in an adjacent lane that swerved to avoid the two trucks unfortunately got entangled with another car. All four vehicles were blocking the entire autobahn causing heavy traffic affecting all the motorists. The road had to be closed.
There were no casualties in the said accident but the drivers had injuries and had to be admitted to the hospital for treatment. The injuries did not stop there, though. The first of Ferrari’s mild hybrid sports cars, the Ferrari LaFerrari has earned the title as one of the best hybrid sports cars that has ever been developed. Only 499 units were produced from 2010 up to 2015. Each of these cars is sought after by Ferrari fans and car collectors, easily beating any other exotic sports car in the market.
Being a hybrid, the LaFerrari runs on a 789-horsepower V12 engine and an additional 161 horsepower from its electric motor. It is capable of sprinting through tracks like a Bugatti Chiron but with a reduced displacement. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.5 seconds and has an estimated top speed of over 217 mph. At the Fiorano Test Circuit, the LaFerrari achieved a lap time of 1:19.70, making it the fastest road-legal Ferrari-made car.

An open secret. That was how Volkswagen's internal investigation described the carmaker's development of software that could cheat diesel emissions tests, according to a report from Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.
According to the daily, a number of managers and employees dealing with emissions issues in the engine department have knowledge or involvement in the development of the so-called the "defeat devices." Sueddeutsche Zeitung, along with regional broadcasters NDR and WDR, conducted a research into the matter.
The paper reported that there was a culture of collective secrecy prevailing within the engine department, where the matter was openly discussed as early as 2006. However, a number of individuals took exception. The two seats that were reserved for members representing shareholders and were lying vacant will be now filled in by Josef Ahorner and Julia Kuhn Piech. Matthias Muller had joined in as a Management Board Member in Volkswagen AG on March 1, 2015 and had been its Chairman since September 25, 2015.
Regarding his educational background, Matthias Muller completed his high school education from Ingolstadt after which he completed an apprenticeship in toolmaking at Audi. Volkswagen has reiterated that it only discovered that its carbon dioxide emission labels were incorrect as part of its efforts to resolve the diesel emissions scandal that rocked the auto world in September. Earlier this month, VW said it understated carbon dioxide emission and fuel consumption figures of around 800,000 cars marketed mainly in Europe.
But a report from a local newspaper said otherwise. According to Bild am Sonntag, without disclosing its sources, top executives at the German carmaker had knowledge of some incorrect labels, which indicated lower carbon dioxide emission and fuel consumption levels than actual.

The contracts of each of Toyota’s about 500 new car dealerships in Germany have been canceled effective May 31. The automaker is setting up a one-tier network as it hopes to stop a sales decline in the market. Thomas Schalberger, the head of Toyota Germany communications, said that the automaker wants to set up this network by June 1, 2016.
He said that letters of cancellation were sent to new car dealerships last Monday. Drafts that outline the partnerships based on new-car agreements were sent together with the cancellations. However, not all of the dealers received them.
Schalberger said that over the next 12 months, the dealerships will need to adapt their structures to the changes in market conditions. Sales in Germany of new cars climbed 9% in March 2015 due to an extra sales day and a strong optimism experienced by the largest economy in Europe. Sales in key markets in the region, including France and Italy, also went up last month. It appears that the gradual recovery in this region is continuing.
German motor transport authority (KBA) said last Thursday that in Germany, registrations increased to 323,039 vehicles.
Consumer morale is robust – evident in the 4.6% increase year-on-year of sales to private customers (which make up 35.8% of the market). Sales in the first quarter grew 6.4% to 757,630 units. An experiment is underway to test self-driving vehicles on a portion of the A9 autobahn that connect Berlin and Munich, according to Transportation Ministry spokesman Ingo Strater. The experiment would the first to be done on a stretch of public highway, an unrestricted one nonetheless. Strater remarked that the German auto industry has recognized that field of driverless vehicles is developing, adding that the government would want to support that.
The driverless section in the autobahn underscores the current push for cars that don’t need the drivers’ intervention when on the move. According to Strater, the project would allow autonomous cars cruising on the test section of the autobahn to communicate with each other as well as with the infrastructure itself. He said that the goal will be to link the road and the vehicles to cut traffic jams and improve road safety.
The autonomous autobahn project will initially include testing sensors, measuring systems and vehicle communication, according to the Transport Ministry.
