BMW i8 gets Dark Knight Edition body kit from Energy Motor

Despite the fact that the BMW i8 continues to be among the most gorgeous-looking vehicles in the market, several tuning companies always want to have a shot at this hybrid sports car. Let’s just say, this is a car we’d love to see Bruce Wayne drive from dusk till dawn for a change.

Japanese tuner ENERGY MOTOR SPORT has recently developed a BMW i8 straight out of DC Comics. According to the company, the “Dark Knight Edition” is made in honor of the 2008 superhero thriller featuring Batman. Directed by Christopher Nolan and produced by Charles Roven and Emma Thomas, “The Dark Knight Trilogy” stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Aaron Eckhart and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Therefore, we can expect no less from a car inspired by a movie with such a high caliber cast and crew.

Like all things with the caped superhero theme, this “Dark Knight Edition” BMW i8 wears a Batman–inspired costume. Starting from its new over fender with air ducts, to the side mirror covers, rear flipper and redesigned bumper all the way to its massive rear wing, every inch is wrapped in a matte purple color.

One-off Pagani Zonda ZoZo faces horrible crash in Japan

It’s not everyday that we hear stories about horrible car accidents but it seems this year has brought us a lot of bad news. What’s tragic is that the cars involved are not just average cars. Among the unfortunate incidents are those that destroyed a black Maybach 62S and the Pagani Zonda ZoZo that collided in Tokyo, Japan. Read on.

Based on the photos that surfaced after the accident, the Maybach was behind the one-off Pagani Zonda. Judging from this angle, the luxury sedan isn’t badly hurt. But still, we feel bad for the owner of the Pagani. The special Zonda was made to order by Zozotown founder Yusaku Maezawa. He had it equipped with a powerful 750 hp 7.3 litre V12 AMG engine apart from the specially designed carbon fibre exterior.

Just a few weeks ago, the 41-year old Maezawa posted a video on Instagram showing his beloved Zonda ZoZo alongside an Aston Martin One-77.The online shopping magnate only had his ZoZo in shorter than a year and so it doesn’t feel right to see it go just like that.

2017 Mazda CX-5 production kicks off in Japan

We have good news for those who are waiting for the latest version of the Mazda CX-5 compact crossover. It was just unveiled in November at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show, and now the Japanese carmaker is busy assembling the 2017 Mazda CX-5 at its production facilities in Japan.

In fact, a number of CX-5 models – those wrapped in the new Soul Red Crystal color – have been rolled off the production line at the carmaker’s Ujina Plant No. 2 located near its global headquarters in Hiroshima, Japan. The initial batches of the new 2017 Mazda CX-5 compact crossover will arrive in Japan in February 2017 and in other global markets right afterwards.

Developed as “an SUV all customers will enjoy,” the new Mazda CX-5 is designed to provide superior passenger comfort with its quiet and finely crafted cabin and pleasant ride. In an effort to improve the crossover’s motion control, Mazda fitted the 2017 CX-5 with the G-Vectoring Control that could tweak its engine’s torque level to allow easier steering. Three engines are available for the 2017 Mazda CX-5: SKYACTIV-G 2.0 and 2.5 gasoline units and the SKYACTIV-D 2.2 diesel powerplant.

In line with the 100th anniversary celebration of BMW Japan, the brand has once again released another limited-edition model which is the BMW 640i Gran Coupe. Specifically however, this new version will be the 12th such model that is part of the brand’s “Celebration Edition”. The new model will be based on the 640i that has been fitted with the M Sport package.

For the general features, it is easy to see that this Exclusive Sport model does not add anything new considering that all of the add-ons put on it can be applied as well on the standard 6 Series Gran Coupe. The body comes in Sapphire Black Metallic with the alloy 20-inch M wheels. There is also the aluminum side window BMW Individual moldings applied in addition to the M Sport body kit.

On the interior, one can observe that an electric sunroof has been fitted as standard. Then there is the Alcantara headliner, the same one in the BMW Individual catalog. While the dashboard has been wrapped in leather that comes with contrast stitching, the seats are covered in black/cognac Nappa leather. Meanwhile, the brand made sure to give the iDrive controller a ceramic finish. To serve as evidence that this is not your standard 640i Gran Coupe, the interior has the piano black trim that has the Exclusive Sport badge.

Japan is a beautiful country and home to some of the quirkiest antics in the world. From weird food to peculiar fashion, Japan is the perfect place to find your inner fun and weird self. It’s a place where eccentricity is normal and normal can become almost boring. It’s where you can freely test waters and try out different combinations and no one will absolutely give a damn as long as you’re happy and confident with what you’re doing.

For some, the eccentric nature becomes a way of life while there are others who divert from the norm just to attract attention. Whatever their reasons may be for trying to be different, they surely attract so much attention from people all over the world.

What easier way to attract attention than to dare to be different in physical appearance. Some would change their clothing style, others would prefer surgical intervention, and there are some who attract attention by the things they own – and one very good example is an out-of-this-world tuned car.

Pagani has recently unveiled the one-off Zonda 760 Kiryu convertible in Japan, albeit privately. However, there is no need to scour the internet for spy photos since the carmaker has already released several images of the latest iteration of the 760 series to the public.

Just like all other members of the Zonda 760-series, the Pagani Zonda Kiryu is powered by a 760 hp 7.3-liter naturally aspirated V12 engine, although it remains unclear whether this powerplant will be mated to Pagani’s seven-speed semi-automatic transmission or a six-speed manual gearbox.

Nonetheless, the Pagani Zonda Kiryu will be a rear wheel drive model with an extremely low kerb weight. Just like the 760 LM, the Zonda Kiryu features a bare carbon-fiber body laden with an array of elements designed to improve its aerodynamics like a large splitter on the front, and a larger motorsport-like diffuser and fixed wing on the rear.

Testing on the first of Nissan’s prototype vehicles that were built with autonomous driving technology has just begun in Japan. Nissan wanted to know how well it works on both the highway and in the trickier inner city roads.

A sustainable mobile society – this is Nissan’s vision for the future. The automaker defines this as being able to achieve two of its targets -- "Zero Emission" and "Zero Fatality."

What the company means with Zero Emission is that there should be no CO2 gases emitted from its vehicles while Zero Fatality aims to make fatalities due to road accidents a thing of the past.

Toyota is currently hard at work in developing the successor to the first JPN Taxi Concept. This concept will make its debut at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, like its predecessor that debuted in the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show.

Toyota plans to unveil the concept before April 2018. Toyota’s goal with this new taxi concept is to make it a common fixture in the streets of every city in Japan and perhaps the world. This goal is comparable to how the company’s Crown Comfort has become a common choice for taxis in Japan today.

As current trends tend to focus on environmentally-friendlier vehicles, Toyota will of course design the new JPN Taxi Concept to feature excellent environmental performance. It will also be designed with a rapidly aging population in mind. The new JPN Taxi Concept will feature the same hatchback design as its predecessor.

Toyota Motor need not despair even after giving up its title as the biggest automaker in the world as it was able to outdo its top two competitors when it comes to profits. Because of windfall currency gains, Toyota was able to report a 9.1% climb in operating profit to ¥756 billion ($6.16 billion) in the April-June period, its fiscal first quarter.

In this same period, Volkswagen AG posted a $3.85 billion operating profit while General Motors had a $1.3 billion operating profit. VW was able to take away the top spot in global sales from Toyota. For the first six months of 2015, VW said that it sold 5.04 million vehicles. It had a 20,000-unit lead over Toyota, which sold 5.02 million vehicles.

The gap is very slim. Toyota’s Camry sales figure in the U.S. is higher than this number. GM is in third place, with 4.86 million vehicles sold in the first half. In the latest quarter, Toyota posted record operating profit and revenue for any first quarter. For the first quarter, it recorded a net income of $5.27 billion, a 10% increase.

Mazda has commenced sales of its CX-3 compact crossover in Japan, powered by a 1.5-liter diesel engine. But for the United States, the engine choice will be a gasoline one, according to Mazda chief engineer Michio Tomiyama. Mazda expects to sell around 150,000 CX-3s annually, 36,000 units of them from Japan.

The Japanese price for the CX-3 starts at JPY2.376 million ($19,970) and tops out at JPY3.024 million ($25,410). Mazda chief executive Masamichi Kogai said the CX-3 will be introduced in Australia by end of March this year, and then in Europe. The compact crossover will be launched in the US in mid-2015.

According to Kogai, Mazda only offers a diesel package in Japan since the brand’s other diesel offerings are hot commodities in the country. In fact, around 75 percent of CX-5 buyers in Japan picked diesel version, and Mazda sold over half of the 79,222 clean diesel passenger vehicles delivered in the country in 2014.

Toyota has been known for its its massive assembly lines producing thousands of vehicles every day. Yet, it has established a workshop that builds just three vehicle everyday, manned by just 13 people. This workshop is for its futuristic fuel cell sedan, the Mirai. What is ironic is that while Mirai is Toyota’s most advanced vehicle, it seems to have a low-tech birth – no conveyors, no andon lines, just a small-batch, kid-glove approach.

Assembly is also done by hand. “Compared with other plants, this has very low productivity,” remarked Mitsuyuki Suenaga, an assistant manager at the Motomachi workshop, which was tasked to build the Mirai. “It is all manual,” he said. But everything has a purpose, as President Akio Toyoda says the Mirai represents a return to roots, in attention to quality and pioneering spirit.

While actual actual production of the Mirai started in December 2014, Toyoda remarked he deliberately chose Feb. 24, 2015, to celebrate as it marks the fifth anniversary of what many in the carmaker consider as its lowerst point.

Workers at Japanese auto makers are asking for a bigger share of the companies’ projected JPY4 trillion ($33.6 billion) in annual profit, via a raise for the next fiscal year. The workers, represented by 11 unions, plans to demand a JPY6,000 ($50) monthly raise for the fiscal year starting April 1, according to the Confederation of Japan Automobile Workers’ Unions, which has around 766,000 members at parts suppliers, dealers and the carmakers.

Even Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has urged companies to increase wages to help the country sustain its ongoing recovery. While pay surged in 2014, it failed to boost spending due to a sales-tax increase, carmakers were able to earn more thanks to the weakening yen.

The JPY6,000 surge in in monthly base wages that the Toyota Motor Workers’ Union recently proposed was equal to a raise of around 1.7 percent for its 63,000 workers. Toyota is expected to answer the proposal on March 18.

Toyota Motor Corp. plans to produce more SUVs this year at its sites in Japan and Canada to cater to growing demand in the United States. Jim Lentz, chief executive officer of Toyota’s North American operations, remarked that the freeze on building new plants remains until end of March 2016, and the carmaker will have to squeeze more vehicles from its existing sites to meet a surge in demand.

Toyota will continue to expand the output of its SUVs after sales these models jumped 16 percent in 2014 to a new record. Toyota was able to regain its crown as the largest carmaker in the world as it continues to perform very well in the US, as boosted by its SUV models like the RAV4 and the RX.

The Japanese carmaker sells five SUVs while main rival Volkswagen AG only offers two. But Toyota may not stop at five as it is considering smaller SUVs for further growth, according to Lentz.

In terms of rear-wheel drive performance cars, Japanese carmakers have been dominating this category in their own territory. One seldom sees foreign carmakers making headway in the local scene with their own rwd performance offers – with the exception of German auto companies. Audi of Japan has started offering the S1 supermini hot hatch, a small quattro car priced at JPY4,100,000 ($37,000).

However, aside from being expensive for its size (just four meters of length), it also offers little room inside. But what makes the S1 supermini a possible hot buy is the fact that it is powered by a 2.0 TFSI turbo engine, which delivers 231 PS of output at 6,000 rpm and 370 Nm of torque from 1,600 rpm. Mated to a six-speed short-throw manual, this 2.0 TFSI turbo engine allows the S1 supermini pocket rocket to move from zero 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds.

To stand out, Audi painted the S1 supermini in Vegas Yellow and installed different headlights than the regular A1 model, incorporating LED daytime running lights. Just like its S siblings, the S1 features silver door handles and a silver grille.

Until recently, no American brand has managed to land a place among the 10 Best Cars in Japan. That is until the Jeep Cherokee was named as one of the 10 Best Cars for 2014-2015 – a first among US brands and nameplates.

Jeep’s barging into the 10 Best Cars rankings in Japan – considered as the country’s prestigious auto honor – could be an indication that the nation is opening, albeit a little, to foreign carmakers. While European brands and nameplates have already managed to break into the list, only one – the Volkswagen Golf-- grabbed a place in the previous edition.

According to one judge for this year’s ranking, the Mercedes-Benz C class almost made the list, but it was narrowly beaten by the redesigned Mazda2 compact. In case a foreign car does not claim a place in the ranking, the judging committee creates a special import Car of the Year Award, which was grabbed by the C class this year.

Mazda announced that its recently unveiled 2015 Mazda2 just won the Japan’s Car of the Year award. According to the press release, it was a hard ‘battle’ between the Mazda2 and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, but the Japanese hatchback managed to win the award by 19 votes. BMW i3 took the third place, while the Subaru Levorg finished 4th, ahead of the Suzuki Hustler.

“With the Mazda2, we have rewritten the rule book for compact cars. Our new Skyactiv technology, excellent mileage, reasonable pricing and unique design all contributed to our victory today,” commented Mazda’s EVP, Kiyoshi Fujiwara.

Moreover, the BMW i3 won the ‘Innovation Award’, while the Honda N-WGN received the ‘Small Mobility Award’.

Although it sounds kind of stupid, Japanese tuning company Eve.Ryn decided that the BMW i3 needs some design upgrades and decided to improve the German electric car. The exterior changes are quite consistent and include a new front bumper with carbon fiber inserts and large air inlets, flared wheel arches, new side sills, a rear roof spoiler as well as a new rear bumper with integrated air diffuser.

In addition, a new set of wheels was installed, which make the vehicle look even sportier. There are no details regarding any performance upgrades, which means we will find the same electric motor that produces 170 hp (125 kW) and 250 Nm (184 lb-ft) of torque.

Power it sent to the rear wheels and the BMW i3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.3 seconds, while top speed is 93 mph or 150 km/h. BMW also offers a Range Extender which consists in a 605cc two-cylinder four-stroke petrol engine that generates 34 hp.
