Subaru upgrades looks, performance of 2018 WRX and WRX STI models

Subaru just commenced sales of the fifth-generation Subaru Impreza months ago starting with the 2017 model. It was very impressive with its new appearance, but we won’t be able to see its new looks on the Impreza WRX or WRX STI soon, especially if the current generation of these performance models was just introduced in 2015. At the earliest, the next generation high-performance Impreza model would be available by the end of the decade.

But while the upcoming 2018 Subaru Impreza WRX and the Impreza WRX STI won’t sport completely new looks, the changes made were what many customers, fans and enthusiasts were waiting for – a more dynamic performance and a more aggressive appearance to match.

Just like on the WRX, the 2018 Subaru WRX STI boasts of a revised suspension tuning. Not only that, Subaru tweaked the DCCD AWD system by employing electronic control, thereby resulting to a quicker and smoother response. It also gave the 2018 Subaru WRX STI a set of newly designed 19-inch alloy wheels – with the Y-shaped spoke design – wrapped in 245/35R19 tires. Behind the wheels is the upgraded Brembo Performance Brake System with yellow-painted brake calipers.

The 2015 Subaru WRX and WRX STI have earned the 2014 Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS). The vehicles both logged good performance in each of the Institute’s crashworthiness assessments, including the small overlap front test.

The latest accolade means that Subaru now has six models that have earned 2014 safety awards from IIHS -- three with Top Safety Pick and three with Top Safety Pick+ -- including the Legacy sedan and Outback models with optional EyeSight.

The Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive Subaru WRX comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder 268 hp engine paired to a six-speed manual transmission.

It is available at a starting price of $26,295. The higher-performance WRX STI model, meanwhile, is powered by a turbocharged, 2.5-liter boxer 305-hp four cylinder engine and carries a base price of $34,495.

Subaru is also offering a Launch Edition of the WRX STI, available in only 1,000 units over the first three months of production. It will be featured in exclusive WR Blue with gold BBS alloy wheels, with blue trim throughout the interior.

All 2015 Subaru WRX STI models are offered with Alcantara seating surfaces and standard LED exterior lighting, and the Limited trim adds leather. They will also be offered with a power driver's seat, a moon-roof and a premium Harman/Kardon audio system.

Thomas J. Doll, president and chief operating officer, Subaru of America remarked that since safety is one of their brand tenets, they are extremely proud to have earned a Top Safety Pick rating for their performance models.

Subaru’s models -- Impreza and WRX – won’t anymore be available in the UK in the upcoming year. According to Autoexpress, Subaru’s dealerships in the UK will sell down remaining inventory. The new Impreza won’t be brought to the market. This model had recently started selling in Japan and the U.S. to the UK market in 2013.

This isn’t too surprising since the WRX has a niche status when compared to the Subaru Impreza, which has a wider lineup. The WRX is also one generation older than the new Impreza. The C-segment class is one of the biggest in Britain and Europe so the fact that the Impreza isn’t moving forward is a shock.

Subaru said that its focus will be on the XV, Forester and Outback models. It also added the BRZ to its UK range so that it could offer a performance-oriented model.

The XV, which is known as the XV CrossTrek in the U.S., has a close relationship to the Impreza, so Subaru will still have a C-segment sized model in its offerings for the UK market. Another model that may soon be lost is the Legacy D-segment sedan. According to a spokesperson, he can’t say for sure what will happen to the Legacy after 2013.

An extraordinarily strong sales performance by the Subaru Impreza helped Subaru of America achieve its second-best U.S. sales month ever. Subaru of America posted a 20% hike in year-on-year sales for the month of March. Bill Cyphers, Subaru’s senior vice president of sales, attributed the company’s strong sales performance in March to the all-new 2012 Impreza as well as to the Legacy.

Subaru posted a 214% hike in sales for the Impreza -- not including the WRX model -- in March to 8,545 vehicles, a record month for the model. The model’s quarterly performance is also something very impressive, as the Impreza sold 21,100 units for the first three months of 2012, compared to just 7,787 units sold for the same period in 2011.

Consumer Reports noted that the Impreza’s redesign was the main factor for the drastic increase in sales for the vehicle, which was not always a popular model. A Subaru spokesman, meanwhile, attributed Impreza’s titanic success in March to combination of factors, like “clever marketing.”

The spokesman said that the Impreza is a perfect example of “everything coming together,” like having the best fuel economy in its category. The company spent effort to sell the Impreza to its target market.

The company marketed the Impreza through several “clever” marketing campaigns like ‘Work Play Love’ and ‘First Car Story.’ Subaru also tried to reach a wide audience in February through television with three spots: “200,000 miles,” “The Door” and “The Apple and The Tree.”

Subaru also launched an interactive Web site, firstcarstory.com, and a campaign that gives workers a chance to take part in a big kids’ play day. According to Brian Johnson, Subaru’s national advertising manager, the company refocused its marketing of Subaru and Impreza to highlight its safety, reliability and longevity.

With the outgoing Subaru Impreza having a wheelbase measuring 103.2 inches, the new model has one that measures 104.1 inches. However both the width and the length are still the same. Having a longer wheelbase with both the front seats and the interior trim being redesigned gave the new Impreza a larger space for the passengers and the cargo room.

Because of how the backrest of the front seat has been redesigned to have a scallop-style, and of course with the wheelbase made longer, the rear passengers benefit from the almost 2 inches of legroom added. In addition to the amount of luggage space being increased, this can be enhanced further and it will even have a flat load floor through the seatbacks in the rear having a 60-40 split fold. For this new 5-door hatchback, loading and unloading objects have been made easier, considering that the stepped section located under the opening has been removed.

Further, the cover of the cargo area can now be hidden beneath the cargo floor. This is the same as that of the Forester. Subaru also enhanced the utility and carrying space on the interior. There are now a number of compartments within the center console where personal items can be store like USB drivers or phones. There is even a large door pocket where one can put in large maps or even plastic drink bottles. Going back to the seats, since the front seats now have higher seatbacks, this allowed for greater comfort.

The same seats now provide better lumbar support and the cushions placed on it are even able to distribute the pressure more efficiently. Much like the 2010 Legacy, all of the seats have been optimized against a rear-end collision. The brand also put additional focus in making sure that the refinement was enhanced. The different details and the appointments of the interior have been made richer. Soft-touch materials have been used for the dashboard as well as that of the center console armrest and door trim.

Sales of the 2012 Impreza, Legacy and Outback models from Subaru were halted on Nov. 25 over complaints on increased brake pedal travel. In addition, the recall for about 3,000 units already delivered to their owners has been issued. Parent company Fuji Heavy Industries said that the company got about 130 reports of the brakes being defective.

So far, it has confirmed the flaw on three vehicles. Subaru of America spokesman Michael McHale said that several customers have complained that the brakes “didn't feel right” and that the pedal travelled farther than it should.

However, he reiterated that there were no failure issues and accidents. Subaru would need to replace the master cylinder in order to repair the vehicle. McHale said that the 130 field reports originated from either dealers or dealership personnel that handle the cars. The NHTSA has already been informed and the recall notices are currently being distributed to vehicle owners.

They’re expected to be released within a day or two. McHale anticipates that sales will resume within a few days or maybe on the early part of next week. Most of the vehicles are Legacy and Outback models produced at Subaru's SIA plant in Lafayette, Ind.

A small number are Imprezas produced at Subaru's plant in Gunma Prefecture in Japan. The master cylinder is a common part for the three vehicles built by a supplier.

The parts that were defective come from one production batch. McHale said that its priority is to fix the 3,000 vehicles already sold. It would then repair the vehicles in the inventory. It takes around one hour to repair each vehicle.

2012 Subaru Impreza was first seen at the New York International Auto Show in 2011. The fourth generation model has daring and dynamic design elements. It will also be introducing a line of new engines. The compact car has bigger space inside, and handling agility has also been improved.

Infotainment technology, more features and better materials for the interior help give you a more satisfying ownership and driving experience.

In the United Kingdom, the 2012 Subaru Impreza comes with a new Boxer engine that is coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. You can also pair this 1.6 litre engine with the new Lineartronic CVT. All new Imprezas come equipped with the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive.

The new model has a longer wheelbase that is coupled with shorter front and rear overhangs, giving it more space for the interior while retaining the external appearances from its predecessor. The passenger cabin is more spacious and it feels that way, especially when visibility is also improved.

Daring and Functional Design

New Impreza has a more daring and confident look that underlines its sporty history as well as the All-Wheel Drive system. Viewed from the side, the 2012 Impreza directs your attention to the powerful wheel arches and the wheels, the same theme that you see on the 2010 Subaru Legacy.

Up front, you have the Subaru badge accentuating the hexagonal grille. This grille is a new Subaru trademark. The 2012 Impreza has the trademark hawk-eye headlights plus the new wheel covers and new alloy wheel stylings.

Various design elements also give the new Impreza a more athletic appearance while also giving its occupants a better view of what lies ahead. The windshield is slanted more than the ones you find on earlier models, while the A-pillar is now placed close to eight inches more forward. That paved the way for a longer front door opening, giving you easy access into the car. You also get lower doorsills and bigger rear doors.

This S206 version of the Impreza WRX STI is a product of the STI tuning division of Subaru. Japan fans are in luck since this model will be on display at the Tokyo Motor Show and is available in the country too. But it won’t be offered in the UK similar to the special STI-tuned S202, S203, S204 and R205 models that came previously. Subaru considers the S206 to be the “crown of its STI tune cars.”

The revisions to the S206 when compared to the standard WRX STI include additional power for its engine (which was exclusively built) and a group of sporty styling upgrades.

It also received a complete makeover for its suspension. The 2.0-litre four-cylinder boxer engine got an extra 20bhp over the standard WRX STI to reach 316bhp. Its torque was also raised by 18lb ft to 318lb ft. Other modifications include an improved twin-scroll turbocharger, STI-tuned ECU and sports muffler with lowered back pressure exhaust.

Subaru has yet to release the official performance figures of the car but it has announced that it has raised the accelerator response and its mid-range torque was also boosted to offer an improved driveability. The suspension revisions include an exclusive set of Bilstein front shock absorbers and STI coil springs.

It also has a flexible tower bar and draw stiffener at the front that provides a better straight-line performance. It keeps the car steady during cornering to enable it to make “precise and quick” adjustments mid-corner. It features new 19in BBS alloys with Michelin Pilot Super Sport tires. Aerodynamics is improved by putting in a new spoiler, grille and lower bumper. Meanwhile, the large fixed wing at the rear has been removed.

Its interior boasts of Recaro racing bucket seats and the use of Alcantara trim. In addition, Subaru offers a distinctive NBR Challenge Package edition of the S206. With this model, Subaru seeks to celebrate its class win at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The vehicle has a carbonfibre roof and rear spoiler. Only 300 units of the S206 will be built but 100 of these are the NBR editions that have already sold out.

The Subaru Impreza WRX STI was already a highly optimized performance vehicle with specific chassis tuning and aluminum front lower L-arms that reduce unsprung weight. But the new 2011 model has major changes in chassis tuning, which includes a lower ride height as well as new pillow-ball bushings in the front and stiffer bushings in the rear subframe, supporting the double-wishbone suspension. All of these help improve camber and toe stiffness.

Both the front and rear suspension systems of the Subaru WRX STI use higher-rate springs as well as thicker front and rear stabilizer bars compared to the 2010 model (21 mm vs. 20 mm in the front and 19 mm vs. 18 mm in the rear). The spring rates increased by 15.6 percent in the front and 53 percent in the rear.

The 2012 Subaru Impreza WRX STI also has new standard 18-inch aluminum wheels that feature high-luster paint. They also weigh 17.6 lbs. less than the previous model’s standard wheels. The 2011 model’s optional 18 x 8.5-in. BBS forged aluminum-alloy wheels, which lessen unsprung car weight, are highlighted by silver high-luster paint.

The new car has a Brembo Performance Brake System, which is exclusive to the Subaru Impreza WRX STI. This brake system uses ventilated 4-wheel Super Sport anti-lock (ABS) disc brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD). The Super Sport ABS is able to control the braking forces independently at each rear wheel, thereby optimizing braking ability during hard cornering in order to lessen understeer.

What Subaru accomplished at the Los Angeles Auto Show was to confirm the U.S.-market name for its new small crossover and to give assurances to the media that the rear-drive-only BRZ doesn’t mean the end of its AWD hot rods. It was recently reported that for the first time, the next-generation WRX and STI will use their own distinct platform. As a result, this distances the enthusiast models from the workaday Impreza on which they were previously based.

Subaru added that the WRX will still be turbocharged and will have a forced-induction version of its new 2.0-liter “FB” boxer four. The STI version has an output of more than 300 hp. Using this new platform reduces the curb weights for both.

As they have different platforms, it’s understandable that “Impreza” will be dropped from the names of the next-gen WRX and STI when they arrive about two years from now. This means that enthusiasts will get to choose from among three models that have three-letter names.

Subaru of America came out with a new four-door version of its Subaru Impreza WRX STI performance flagship model. This means that the 2011 WRX STI is now offered in two body styles – the 5-door and the 4-door. Other than their new styling, the new cars also feature significantly revised suspension tuning as well as lighter 18-inch wheels for a much sharper and improved handling.

Since the Subaru Impreza WRX STI was introduced to the market, it has been constantly updated and improved. The 2010 WRX STI Special Edition, for instance, has previewed some of the suspension enhancements that are now incorporated into the 2011 Subaru Impreza WRX STI. Moreover, the Impreza has also undergone a thorough and painstaking chassis development, which included testing on Germany’s famous Nurburgring racetrack. This resulted in the best-handling WRX STI models ever offered by Subaru.

Tom Doll, Subaru of America, Inc.’s executive vice president and chief operating officer, said that the Subaru Impreza WRX STI continues to evolve with the enthusiastic support of its loyal customers. He said that the 4-door model will attract a broader range of driving fans.

The 2011 WRX STI features sharpened bumper corners as well as wider, blacked-out fog lamp nacelles at the front, accentuating its “wide and low” profile. It also has a jutting lip spoiler with three-dimensional detailing that highlights the car’s sportiness. Moreover, the freshly designed front grille with black base and the blacked-out Subaru wing emphasize the shape of the headlight that give its front end a more strong and powerful look, accentuated by larger grille and bumper intake openings.

The 2011 WRX STI 4-door model boasts a newly designed wider rear fenders that wrap the side beyond the tail lamps, thereby accentuating the vehicle’s stability and reliability. These fresh details also contribute to the new car’s improved drag coefficient.

According to the latest reports, it seems that Subaru will begin selling the well-known Impreza WRX and STI performance models separately from the standard Impreza when the car will be redesigned next month. Moreover, the Impreza name will be removed from the derivates, which means that we should get used to the Subaru WRX/STI names.

The new cars will also get their own platforms when they will be redesigned in 2013. According to Bill Cyphers, senior vice president of sales for Subaru of America, this new strategy will allow Subaru to focus on the redesigned Impreza's improved fuel economy and added interior space.

New WRX and STI models will allow Subaru to market them more easily as performance cars and to give them interiors and features more appropriate for more expensive sports cars. Regarding the 2013 models, Cyphers refused to give any details, but he said that the STI will continue to be powered by a 300+ hp engine.

Subaru Impreza will go on sale in November as a four-door sedan or five-door hatchback, at the same price as the current model but with a new engine and a roomier interior. Its launch was delayed by the March earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

Impreza comes with a new 2.0-liter, four-cylinder boxer engine with 148 hp and a new continuously variable transmission capable to deliver a fuel consumption of 36 mpg on the highway and 30 mpg combined, compared with 27 mpg highway/24 mpg combined for the outgoing models.

Subaru of America has launched a new 4-door model of the Subaru Impreza WRX STI. This is the first time that the performance flagship model will be offered in five-door and four-door body styles. On top of this, the 2011 WRX STI will have redesigned suspension tuning and 18-inch wheels that are lighter to make way for sharper handling.

Impreza WRX STI has been continuously improved since it was first introduced. If you want to see the new suspension improvements in the new Impreza WRX STI, then take a look at the 2010 WRX STI Special Edition. The chassis has also been improved and tested on the Nurburgring racetrack, giving the new 2011 WRX STI the best handling that Subaru has offered in its vehicles.

Subaru of America, Inc., executive vice president and COO Tom Doll says that the continuous improvement and development of the Impreza have been fueled by the loyal, vocal, and strong support that they get from previous owners of the vehicle. He says that the new Subaru Impreza WRX STI 4-door will help to reach more driving enthusiasts.

New Designs

2011 WRX STI models have sharper corners for the bumper as well as wider fog lamp nacelles to help underline the wide and low profile. The lip spoiler juts out with 3-D detailing, giving the vehicle a sportier look.

You also have a redesigned front grille that has a black base and wing, helping to make the front appear more powerful. There are also bigger bumper intake and grille openings. The four-door models also feature wider rear fenders that go beyond the taillights and contribute to lower aerodynamic drag.

Official details about Subaru’s WRX STI haven’t been released yet but insiders have said that the high-performance version of the all-new Subaru Impreza will arrive at dealerships in the summer of 2012. It’s expected to be launched about a year from now. It will appear first as a 5-door hatchback but a sedan version may follow.

Subaru is planning to enter the WRX STI in numerous motorsports events. The hatchback may soon appear at rally events while the sedan competes in touring-car races. It’s still uncertain if the U.S.-spec WRX STI will be different from the home-market version but it’s likely that both will deliver over 300 bhp.

This model will be equipped with a new version of the FB flat-4 with a turbocharger. Sources say that the 2.0-liter engine has an output of 330 bhp and 324 lb.-ft. of torque, making it 8 bhp and 12 lb.-ft. higher than the existing domestic model. Even with the added power, its fuel economy rating will still be better.

It has a price tag of about $35,000, but Subaru may bring that lower to the $30,000 mark. However, the stronger yen may make this unlikely. Akihide Takeuchi, the product general manager of the Impreza, declined to comment on the car’s progress but he said that it would be better not to have too high expectations.

For many, the Subaru Impreza WRX STI is a performance vehicle that has been fully optimized. Its chassis for example has been specifically tuned while the lower L-arms on the front, made of aluminum, help lower the unsprung weight. Going back to the chassis, some of the major changes involved lowering the ride height. It also utilizes a double-wishbone suspension made possible by having pillow-ball bushings in the front sub-frame while the rear sub-frame has the stiffer bushings. With this, both the stiffness and camber are improved.

One reason why the 2011 WRX STI remains to be a Subaru that displays ultimate performance is the 4-cylinder turbocharged/intercooled Boxer engine with output at 305 hp and the fact that it’s paired to a manual 6-speed transmission. It also has its own version of the Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive which is the Multi-Mode Driver Controlled Center Differential.

With this, the driver has access to three Auto modes plus a manual mode that allows for six selectable settings for the differential locking. Exclusive to this model though is the Brembo Performance Brake System which utilizes the 4-wheel Super Sport ventilated anti-lock disc brakes which come with the Electronic Brake-force Distribution.

Since the anti-lock system is able to independently control the braking forces that are on each of the wheels in the rear, it allows the braking ability to be optimized and thus lower the understeer especially when undergoing hard cornering.

Regarding its suspension systems, both the front and the rear make use of thicker stabilizer bars for the front and rear. Compared to the 2010 model for example, where the front measures 20 mm, the one in the 2011 WRX STI comes in at 21 mm. For the rear, it is 18 mm for the 2010 version and 19 mm for the 2011 one.

Spring rates are also higher with the front of the 2011 WRX STI getting a 15.6% increase and the rear having as much as a 53% increase. Fitted to it as standard will be the new aluminum 18-inch wheels which use high-luster paint and when compared to the previous wheels, are lighter by 17.6 pounds.

There is however the option to have the forged aluminum-alloy 18 x 8.5-in. BBS wheels that can lower the unsprung weight even further and also has the silver high-luster paint.
