Lexus reinvents itself by marrying sportiness and luxury with LC 500 grand touring coupe

When Lexus unveiled the LC 500 luxury sports coupe, it proved to the world that it is brave enough to reinvent itself. Well, it was not long ago when Lexus was considered as a premium brand that has become utterly boring. That could be because Lexus has been creating premium cars with similar designs, similar cues and similar values.

We couldn’t blame Toyota’s luxury brand for doing that. Lexus spent not just years, but decades of building a reputation for high quality and very reliable vehicles. With this, Lexus was able to experience a surge of success. But its own achievements were what made Lexus quite hard-headed about reinventing itself to become a premium manufacturer of also sporty and exciting luxury cars.

Enter the Lexus 500 luxury sports coupe. This flagship coupe is the company’s strongest statement – so far -- regarding the future direction of its production line. It is bound to influence Lexus’ lineup better than the Lexus LFA sports car. While the luxury brand during recent years has been introducing new models like the IS, NX, and RC -- all of which boast of high levels of emotion – the LC 500 is a personification of performance, luxury and athleticism and style.

Mercedes-Benz gets permission to test autonomous cars in Germany

The race for delivering street-wise autonomous vehicles is heating up as Mercedes-Benz recently received permission from the German government to conduct on-the-road tests of its experimental units.

This isn’t the first time that Mercedes-Benz was granted permission to test its autonomous vehicles. However, the latest approval involves the next generation of the carmaker’s autonomous prototypes, now installed with its newest software dubbed as Daimler Autonomous Vehicle Operating System (DAVOS). These autonomous prototypes are derived from the Mercedes-Benz V-Class (Viano) mid-size passenger van. These test vehicles are fitted with advanced Lidar sensors to allow the DAVOS software to do its work. DAVOS employs a graphic processor and deep-learning technologies to perform as expected.

With these technical specs, these new autonomous prototypes should be able to theoretically operate by themselves. However, two specially trained drivers will be on board each test car for safety reasons. By having these prototypes deployed in real-world conditions, Mercedes engineers would be able to fine-tune the DAVOS software.

These prototypes should allow Mercedes to inch closer to its goal of launching an autonomous vehicle in the near future. Mercedes has been saying it would launch a production autonomous car as soon as its self-driving technology is prepped for public use and as soon as related regulations have been put in place.

These developments come as Mercedes is getting ready to make a good presentation at the upcoming 2017 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Its presence at CES will have a definitive impact on its new CASE corporate strategy that features four pillars: Connected, Autonomous, Shared & Service and Electric Drive.

Ola Kallenius, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, remarked that their CASE strategy will help the carmaker shape the future of mobility. He noted that their goal is to transform the car into a platform for future mobility concepts as well as into a space offering a digital experience. In line with this CASE strategy, Mercedes will be presenting its Concept EQ and Vision Van concept at the 2017 CES.

Aside from Mercedes-Benz, fellow German premium carmakers BMW and Audi are also setting their eyes towards autonomous driving. Just recently, BMW announced its plans to commence testing of autonomous vehicles in the urban environment under its new iNext project, pending regulations. In fact, BMW has opened a new facility in Unterschleissheim, Germany, that is dedicated to vehicle connectivity and automated driving.

This facility will have around 2,600 employees working to develop the autonomous iNext project. Audi, meanwhile, unveiled in December 2016 its Audi Q2 deep learning concept that features a self-learning system. The Audi Q2 deep learning concept features sensor technology that employs two mono cameras and 10 ultrasonic sensors.

Consumer Reports predicts the new 2017 Honda CR-V will be a bestseller

When it comes to being the top crossover, there are only two models that can confidently say they have been in the market for at least 20 years. This is the CR-V from Honda and the RAV4 from Toyota. It really does not come as a surprise to know why these two are also the most popular.

Many are likely familiar with the fact that utility vehicles had a start during the 1970s with the 4x4s. However as more customers demanded vehicles that offer better ride, displays improved fuel economy, and comes with the latest in infotainment and electronic systems, this has led to crossovers entering the market.

For the 2017 CR-V in particular, Consumer Reports reveals that while the prior generation had a rather bland interior, the new version has a cabin that is not only plush, but classy as well. According to Honda, when they developed the new CR-V, they wanted a crossover utility vehicle that would be fitting for the upmarket. It is no wonder then that the 2017 CR-V not only has a cabin that is quieter but it is also a model that delivers a better ride. This was a result of two things with the first being an excellent usage of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) engineering and the second the inclusion of an active noise cancelling system. Honda however was apparently not done with this as the brand managed to give the CR-V a more enjoyable drive by using qualities previously seen on the Civic.

On the interior, the seats wrapped in leather and its dashboard comes with wood trim. The console is just as fantastic. One problem with the new CR-V though is that there are issues in the infotainment system much like what was previously seen in the Civic.

A number of CR-V models to be sold will be powered with the Civic’s Turbo VTEC 1.5-liter engine. Honda however has ensured that the power can be enhanced to 190 hp with peak torque of 197 lb.-ft. Customers though can choose to have the standard 2.4-liter engine that can offer an output of 184 hp. No matter what engine is chosen though, the turbo can still deliver the needed power with the need for so many revolutions.

That is not all as the CR-V also received praise from Consumer Reports for the active safety systems installed inside. Starting with the second trim level and upwards for example, it will have as standard the automatic emergency braking and the forward collision warning. It will not come as a surprise if the 2017 CR-V will get from IIHS the Top Safety Pick+ rating.

Note that all of the information presented come from Consumer Reports as Honda has yet to officially release any of the technical specifications or even the pricing. The brand however is expected to release such information by the end of the month.

An experiment is underway to test self-driving vehicles on a portion of the A9 autobahn that connect Berlin and Munich, according to Transportation Ministry spokesman Ingo Strater. The experiment would the first to be done on a stretch of public highway, an unrestricted one nonetheless. Strater remarked that the German auto industry has recognized that field of driverless vehicles is developing, adding that the government would want to support that.

The driverless section in the autobahn underscores the current push for cars that don’t need the drivers’ intervention when on the move. According to Strater, the project would allow autonomous cars cruising on the test section of the autobahn to communicate with each other as well as with the infrastructure itself. He said that the goal will be to link the road and the vehicles to cut traffic jams and improve road safety.

The autonomous autobahn project will initially include testing sensors, measuring systems and vehicle communication, according to the Transport Ministry. The first autonomous car to cruise the autobahn may not happen before the end of the year.

Autonomous vehicles will also be tested in three cities in the United Kingdom. Earlier this month, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the F015 self-driving luxury concept, which features swivel seats that allows the driver and passengers to face each other.

Likewise, Audi tested an unmanned RS7 at a track at racing speeds in 2014. In the United States, tech giant Google has been testing its driverless cars on California roads. Ford Motor Co. chief executive Mark Fields has remarked that a carmaker would be offering autonomous vehicles on the market within five years.

Although the new halo car for Lexus, it appears that the specialized media is not too interested in the new RC sports coupe. The Japanese company notified journalists that a new-car test-drive event was canceled and the reason is quite unusual: lack of interest. What’s more interesting is that both Japanese and non-Japanese media were invited.

For those who don’t know, the Lexus RC sports coupe was unveiled last year and is inspired by the LF-LC Concept. Lexus will offer its new coupe in two versions, the RC 350 powered by a 3.5-liter V6 petrol engine with 306 hp (236 kW) and 227 lb-ft (375 lb-ft) of torque and the hybrid RC 300h, which uses a 2.5-liter engine.

The most powerful version of the RC Coupe will be the RC F Coupe. This model is powered by a 5.0-liter V8 petrol engine which delivers more than 450 hp and 383 lb-ft (518 Nm) of torque.

Bolted to an 8-speed automatic transmission, the engine pushes the coupe from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.4 seconds, while top speed is 170 mph or 273 km/h.

The luxury sport coupe segment welcomes the new Lexus RC 350 with a bang. In fact, this is probably the hottest thing to arrive from the Japanese brand’s luxury division.

Lexus aims to attract the “new breed” of luxury car buyers as well those who want to try out the brand for the first time. With this in mind, the RC 350 offers the latest technology, luxury, individuality and performance as guaranteed.

Beyond the RC 350’s stunning exterior comes fuel efficiency. The new 2015 Lexus RC 350 bears a standard 306hp, 3.5L V6 engine. This engine is paired with an 8-speed SPDS transmission, which helps deliver fuel savings, responsive torque and impressive acceleration.

One of RC 350’s best features is its outstanding handling capability. This element is very crucial in the midsize sedan’s transformation into a sports coupe model. True enough, Lexus’ bold and powerful new design is something we’ve never seen yet. The 2015 model is built as a standalone model instead of a 2-door version of a sedan.

Apart from the highly expressive designs, we can see how Lexus seems to be heading to the high performance category. One thing we’ve noticed here is the RC 350’s cabin, which bears similarities with the Lexus LFA supercar. Moreover, RC comes out with new technologies such as contrast layering and Infrared that came all the way from Lexus’ concept vehicles.

The Lexus RC 350 comes with both the rear-wheel drive and Lexus’ all-weather drive technology. The all-weather drive may be used with the F Sport or 6-speed automatic transmission. The F Sport features the AVS system aside from the optional Lexus Dynamic Handling with rear-wheel steering system.

From Oct. 11 to Dec. 21, 2014, people in 38 cities across the United States could participate in 20,000 test drives of the new aluminum-bodied 2015 F-150 pickup. The program – dubbed as “Built Ford Tough Roundup” -- part of the carmaker’s bid demonstrate the truck’s abilities and capture buyers for it.

Twenty-six of the 26 cities have already commenced the program. According to Ford spokesman Mike Levine, the test drives could happen at shopping malls or big-box retail stores. During the test drive, participants will be accompanied by product experts to explain the truck’s features, including its Ford-claimed best-in-class towing and payload capabilities.

The program will also allow Ford to demonstrate the performance benefits gained from the aluminum shift as well as educate customers who might be concerned of the metal’s toughness compared to steel. The 2015 F-150 is up to 700 lbs lighter than the outgoing version and has up to 900 lbs more towing power – at 12,200 lbs – than the 2014 model.

Its maximum payload was at 3,300 lbs, which is around 180 lbs higher than its predecessor. The new F-150 can be powered by one of the available four engines, including a new 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6

According to Levine, the 2015 F-150 truck should be EPA-certified in November. Ford disclosed that the new truck should be 5%-20% better in terms of fuel consumption than the current model.

Mitsubishi Motors has completed another stage of testing during the development of Outlander PHEV, this time letting the vehicle experience cold weather in Russia for two months. The testing was part of the goal to make the Outlander PHEV a truly global vehicle that could thrive in all possible driving conditions in all regions in the world.

Prior to the Russia testing, the Outlander PHEV already went hot weather testing in the United States and cold weather assessment in Canada. Three test cars accumulated over 30,000 km during over eight weeks of testing in Russian cities of Moscow, Yekaterinburg and Tolyatti, where they were subjected to a very low temperature of below -30° C and snow-covered road surfaces.

Despite the harsh weather, the Outlander still managed to eke out a good performance, with no issues for the charging system. Mitsubishi’s engineering team has already subjected the Outlander PHEV to places where conventional EVs thrive, testing the plug-in hybrid electric vehicle on various road surfaces.

Its robust construction as well as its Twin Motor 4-wheel drive and “Super-All Wheel Control” (S-AWC) systems managed to withstand all tests in Russia, which means that the Outlander PHEV is all ready to tackle the Russian geography and weather with ease.

Andrey Pankov, chief executive of MMC Rus, which is Mitsubishi’s official distributor in Russia remarked that the Outlander PHEV was made to face in the most unpredictable weather conditions in Russia to test its real-life “driveability” in various, and most demanding, weather conditions.

He remarked that unlike city cars that are engineered exclusively for the city, the Outlander PHEV meets the expectations of their customer base opting for SUV. Mitsubishi will commence selling the Outlander PHEV in Russia from the 2014 Moscow Motor Show at end of August. [source: Mitsubishi]

General Motors will provide a $5,000 incentive to Cadillac dealers who would offer test drives of its ELR plug-in hybrid. Cadillac spokesman David Caldwell said the offer, dubbed as Demonstrator Allowance Program, is designed as a tactical move to attract more test drives of the ELR, who was off to a slow start following its launch.

Caldwell said GM initiated the program due to the “newness of the ELR,” adding that that it is a “different brand.” GM is also offering discounts of up to $3,000 to customers, according to recent report by The Wall Street Journal. ELR inventories are steadily rising, with around 1,700 ELR coupe models in stock at the end of April, equivalent to a 725-day supply, according to the Automotive News Data Center.

Caldwell remarked that GM’s Detroit-Hamtramck site that builds the ELR has had heavier production since the start of 2014 it will in the summer or fall. Industry analysts, however, view things differently. Cadillac started selling the ELR in late December for a starting price of $75,995 -- including shipping – something which analysts and dealers didn’t welcome.

They noted that the price was twice that of the Chevrolet Volt, which shares its powertrain with the ELR. The ELR is the second unit to use GM’s Voltec technology, which entails having a 435lbs battery pack power two electric motors for a pure electric travel range of about 35 miles.

Once the battery loses its juice, a gasoline-powered, 1.4-liter four-cylinder generator will take over to power the drivetrain. Caldwell remarked that the Demonstrator Allowance Program is part of GM’s US-wide effort to get more dealers to support test drives, adding that the Cadillac had successfully implemented similar programs on the West Coast.

Dealers have until June 2 to designate ELRs as test vehicles. Each ELR in a dealer’s test fleet will earn it $5,000. Dealers having fewer than seven unused ELR models could designate one for the program while those having more than seven ELRs can designate two.

To qualify, each vehicle should accumulate a minimum of 750 logged test drive miles. Likewise, dealers can collect a further $2,000 for every ELR sold in July and $1,000 in August.

First launched back in 1995, the Renault Megane has been on the market for almost 20 years and continues to be quite a rival for its German competitors and other players on the market. Last week, we had the chance to test the 2014 Renault Megane Facelift, which was launched back in September at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, and we must admit that we were quite impressed with the car. We had the chance to drive this model last week in Spain, where we also visited the Palencia site, the place where Renault builds the Megane.

For those of you who do not know yet, the latest facelift includes a larger and more prominent Renault badge, a redesigned bumper and a new bonnet, but also new daytime running lights and redesigned headlights. Although these are the only made at the exterior, this is a sophisticated makeover, which boosts the image of the Megane.

A reversing camera helped us park the cars and avoid any obstacles found behind the vehicles. But this is not all, as the Megane comes with a reversing radar too, able to show the drivers how close they are to an obstacle via a sound alert.

All the models tested featured the Bose badges on the fenders, meaning that the vehicles are offered with a gloss black bumper surround along with new upholstery and new 17-inch Akhiro wheels. And this is not all as the Megane Bose model also comes with protective side moldings in chrome and lacquer black, while the Megane Sport Tourer is fitted with chrome-finished roof bars and side window surrounds.

The Megane III ranks among the most reliable cars in its segment and the best proof is the ADAC 2012 (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club) survey that ranks the Megane as “good” or even “excellent” over the service period between 2007 and 2002.

The Megane models that were built in 2009, 2010 and 2011 are ranked as “excellent”. Whether you like the coupe, sport tourer or the hatchback version, the 2014 Renault Megane Facelift remains one of the best choices and the best rival for the VW Group rivals.

Prices for Megane Hatchback, Megane Coupe and Megane Estate start from €20,300, €23,400 and €21,100 respectively. The Megane GT starts at €31,900.
