Aston Martin still working on its SUV based on Lagonda Concept

Aston Martin is proceeding with its development of an SUV that will compete with the upcoming Bentley EXP 9 F. This model is based loosely on the Lagonda Concept that was seen at the 2009 Geneva motor show but Aston aims to come up with a total shift in its style after the show car received mostly criticisms for it. Similar to the 2009 car, the new SUV will be based on the underpinnings of the Mercedes-Benz G-class. Aston discloses that a deal has been entered for Mercedes to be the supplier of platforms, drivetrains and engines. It’s likely that Aston will offer its 6.0-litre V12 in a flagship model, says Autocar. The other possibilities include a variety of smaller petrol and diesel models and a hybrid. The styling will be very different from the concept but it’s still uncertain whether this new SUV will carry an Aston Martin badge or a Lagona (just like the show car). As Bentley and Lamborghini have been preparing their luxury performance SUVs, Aston may get the idea that it doesn’t anymore have to take the risks and costs of relaunching a brand that has mostly been forgotten. Discouraging it further is when it looks at what happened when Mercedes attempted to revive Maybach and failed.
