Aston Martin wins innovative bus design contest

Aston Martin London BusAn innovative bus design custom-built by Autocar has won the competition to produce a contemporary Routemaster for London. The united proposal from Capoco and Autocar won the equal first prize together with a concept made by Aston Martin and architects Foster + Partners. The design of Capoco was headed by Alan Ponsford, who did some minute changes, including refurbished frontal styling, to the design he created last December for Autocar. The Aston-Foster entry vehicle was supervised by Marek Reichman the Aston design boss. He informed Autocar that his crew and Fosters had been seeking for a venture to work together on and thought the new London Bus contest was a perfect opportunity. "The styling is inspired by the pure geometric form used by Apple," Reichman said. Both winning entries utilized hybrid transmissions and, in the case of Capoco's entry, a self-charging electric motor, identical to that employed in the Chevrolet Volt. The designs will be turned over to the final manufacturers of the bus. The signing of the contract to produce them will be held in the first part of next year. Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London said he expected "a goodly number" of new Routemasters to be on the streets of the capital by late 2011, with full manufacture starting in 2012. [source]
