Audi has made extensive changes to the execution of its second-generation A2, moving it up from being in the supermini class into a hatch with the same size as a Golf. At the Frankfurt show last year, Audi introduced its near production-ready version, a preview of the new high-roof hatchback. Audi chief Rupert Stadler said that this car will increase the length of the supermini concept from 3.8 meters to 4.1 meters, the length of the Volkswagen Golf. Several insiders said that because of this, it will be built on a version of the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform that’s bigger than what was initially imagined. They also imply that the A2 production version, which is likely to come out in 2014, is taller by 60mm, going beyond the 1490mm of the concept to about 1550mm. This change comes after the concept’s styling was criticized because it didn’t offer enough load-carrying capacity. The sources told Autocar that a disparity exists in what its engineers had envisaged and what customers find to be significant in daily use. Audi has declined to comment on rumors that the A2 will have the same underpinnings as the upcoming Q2. This is very possible, considering that they have the same basic dimensions.
