Audi aiming to become the leading premium seller of electric vehicles by 2020

It appears that Audi has big plans with its electric business, as Franciscus van Meel, Audi's manager for electric mobility strategy announced that the German car manufacturer wants to be the leader in premium electric vehicles by 2020. Furthermore, Franciscus van Meel also added that Audi will offer a variety of hybrid models and electric vehicles, such as its first plug-in hybrid in 2014.

Audi will offer a full-hybrid version of the A8 flagship sedan, a hybrid version of the Q5 SUV (unveiled last week at the 2010 LA Auto Show – you can read all about it here), a hybrid version of the A6 that will hit the market in 2012, but also a new range of high-priced electric cars such as the R8 e-Tron sports car which will make its debut in 2012. Apparently, Audi is adopting a different strategy from that of rival BMW.

For those who don’t know, Bmw is currently working on its first electric car called Megacity Vehicle, which is designed for urban commuting. This new car will be launched in 2013. "Today we're assuming that our sales of Audi e-tron electric cars will rise to a six-figure volume by 2020," van Meel said. [via autonews - sub. required]
