The engineers of quattro GmbH have worked on the Audi R8 LMS ultra set for release in 2012. This is the replacement for the famous R8 LMS GT3 sports car, which had delighted R8 LMS customers after having won 115 races and 12 national and international titles in just three years. Audi’s wholly owned subsidiary had been focused on this customer sport program. Werner Frowein, Managing Director of quattro GmbH, said that its customer teams have made helpful suggestions and have stated what they wanted for the different fields where the car is used.
Frowein added that they have looked at the suggestions of their customers worldwide and so they used the feedback in the development of the R8 LMS. He said that the team used all the performance measures on the R8 LMS ultra so that they could provide an “intercontinentally competitive and attractive race car in the future." On long trips, additional reserves are provided by an updated transmission. The Audi R8 LMS proved itself last season by making its mark as a great long-distance expert. It has won overall victories at the Bathurst (Australia) 12 Hours, the Spa and Zolder 24 Hours and GT3 class victory. It also placed third overall at the Nürburgring 24 Hours. The engine is improved with the use of a new exhaust system that has race catalytic converters.
The V10 mid-engine is capable of drawing on higher torque at lower engine speeds. Depending on restrictor regulations, the 5.2-litre unit can deliver up to 419 kW (570 HP). It continues to be based on the production engine built at Audi’s plant in Györ, Hungary. It had been able to reach mileages of up to 20,000 kilometres before – a feat that is even more easily achieved now.
"The optimised cooling system of the race car successfully combines several objectives. In addition to a larger engine oil cooler and transmission fluid cooler, an oil cooler for the steering hydraulics that used to be installed at the front is now located in the vehicle’s mid-section. The characteristic side blades of the Audi R8 enable enlarged air vents for the cooling system in the new R8 LMS ultra for improved thermal management. At the same time, air supply to the radiator at the front of the vehicle has been improved, as has the interior ventilation." said the press release.
