Audi is optimistic as sales grow

Audi R8 TDI ConceptAudi is optimistic the new car sales market slump has bottomed out and that 2010 sales would show light growth compared with 2009. Audi sold 91,200 units in June, marking a 1.2% increase compared to the previous year. However, sales for the first half of 2009 totaled 466,000 units, a drop of 9.7%.

Audi plans to expand its line-up to 40 models by 2015 and aims to sell 1.5 million vehicles a year by the following year. Peter Schwarzenbauer said that the low point in sales has already been reached and that since April, the market had been stabilizing. Even then, he doesn’t think Audi will reach one million sales this year, and that it may take 2 or 3 years for the company to duplicate what it achieved in 2008. Last year, Audi also marked its 13th consecutive year of growth. He estimates the figure for this year should be around 900,000. Audi’s fiercest rivals, BMW and Mercedes-Benz, had their slowest sales declines in eight months in June. This suggests that Schwarzenbauer’s conclusions may be correct. BMW’s global sales dropped 13% year on year in June, to 127,546 units, while sales of Mercedes-Benz models were down five percent to 100,300 vehicles.
