Audi to build site in Münchsmünster to ease production in Ingolstadt

Audi has acquired a 40-hectare lot in the Münchsmünster industrial park where it will build another plant. The acquisition is in line with the carmaker plan’s to ease the already tight production at its Ingolstadt site, where the space has become limited. Audi will develop around 27 hectares of its Münchsmünster land. Scheduled to operate in 2013 are a press shop with transfer presses; production lines for form-hardened body components; facilities for machining chassis parts; and an aluminum die-casting foundry. Audi’s Ingolstadt site has been pushed to its limits with more models being produced at the plant. In 2005, Audi was only producing four models in Ingolstadt – the Audi A4 Sedan, A4 Avant, Audi A3 and A3 Sportback. The plant has since expanded to accommodate four more units -- the Audi A5 Coupé, A5 Sportback, Audi A4 allroad quattro and Audi Q5.
With eight units competing for production and logistic space in Ingolstadt, Audi saw it timely needed to construct a new site in Münchsmünster. The industrial park was near the Ingolstadt site and has the necessary infrastructure for producing cars. “It allows us to free up capacity at existing plants and to use sites in the surrounding area for future technologies,” says Audi Production Board Member Frank Dreves.
Audi marked as priority the construction of the aluminum die-casting foundry and a building for machining chassis components. Dreves said the die-cast components are a central element of the company’s lightweight construction strategy. Dreves said that Audi will be able to improve on its technology and ensure the long-term supply of die-cast aluminum parts if it has its own die-cast foundry.
