Audi to launch a fleet trial with 20 A1 e-Tron electric cars in Munich

Audi revealed that it is about to start field trials of the A1 equipped with the e-tron electric drive train, stirring up some heat in the electric vehicles market in Europe. The A1 e-Tron, which was displayed at the Geneva Motor Show, will start with only 20 units to be gradually set out on the streets of Munich. These models will be seen being driven about by mid-2011 and they will be supported by 200 new charging stations in the area that will be built by E.ON and SWM. The trial is intended to determine factors like data transfer between the driver, vehicle, electric stations and power grid. It will also test the usefulness of smartphones as the interface for the driver.
Klaus-Dieter Maubach, E.ON member of the board for Technology, said that its knowledge of user behavior has caused it to shift the locations of its electric filling stations to existing parking lots. He is hopeful that doing this will enable it to further develop the technology of the charging points and the communication with the grid operator. Maubach hopes that this will secure “its leadership role in the development of electric filling stations.”
he A1 e-tron functions due to a transversely mounted synchronous electric motor, which has a continuous output of 45 kW (61 hp), with peak power of 75 kW (102 hp) offered in short bursts. 150 Nm of torque is continuously available, with the peak torque hitting 240 Nm. The motor is equipped with a single-speed transmission that distributes power to the wheels and is mated to a single-rotor 254 cc Wankel engine. Using the extender has resulted to a gain of 200 kilometers (124.27 miles). When fully charged, this battery allows for a maximum range of 50 kilometers (31.07 miles).
