Audi unveils TDIe versions of A5 Sportback and Coupe models

2012 Audi A5 Sportback TDIe

The newest Audi A5 Coupe and A5 Sportback lineups will be offered with two very efficient Audi TDIe engines, two body styles applauded for their enviable curves, and a striking new SE Technik specification. These well-proportioned ranges both come with the latest 2.0-litre TDIe engine that produces 163PS with a CO2 emissions figure of 115g/km and the potential for as much as 64.2mpg. The Sportback comes with a 136PS version of this unit, bearing a similar combination of features. Its appeal rises with its starting price of £27,320 OTR, giving it the recognition as the most cost-effective TDI in the new generation A5 range.

The four-cylinder diesel engines have low internal friction for the most optimal operating efficiency, variable turbine geometry for the sharpest response across the rev range and a new centrifugal governor in a dual-mass flywheel intended to provide further refinement. The new, lighter flywheel boosts engine response at low revs. As a result, it allows earlier up-shifts to make driving more efficient. The A5 Sportback 2.0 TDIe 136PS is capable of sprinting from zero to 62mph in 9.5 seconds, hitting a top speed of 132mph, and offering as much as 64.2mpg, according to the official combined cycle test. It also has a very low CO2 emissions level of 117g/km.

The 163PS version decreases the acceleration time to 8.7 seconds and raises the top speed to 137mph, but it continues to be able to achieve as much as 62.8mpg with an insignificant increase in CO2 emissions to 118g/km. The 163PS engine, when used in the Coupe, offers an even better performance. It enables the TDIe to reach 62mph in 8.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 140mph. It also improves economy to 64.2mpg and lowers the CO2 output to just 115g/km, the lowest level in the revised range. All these engines are mated to a six-speed manual transmission. Aside from the new ‘e’ units, the TDI range in the A5 Sportback still comes with the 143PS and 177PS versions of the 2.0-litre engine, as well as the 3.0-litre V6 TDI in 204PS and 245PS forms. This last one is partnered to the quattro all-wheel-drive without exception. The A5 Coupe features the 177PS 2.0-litre TDI and the two V6 TDIs.
