European automakers (Audi, Volkswagen, Opel, BMW and Ford) hope to minimize the expected huge drop in new-car sales in 2010 by having key launches. Meanwhile, French carmakers Renault, Peugeot and Citroen aim to increase unit sales and revenue by spinning new niche sporty cars such as the Peugeot 308 RCZ off volume platforms. In addition, Peugeot and Citroen will test demand for zero-emission vehicles with the market launch of city electric cars based on Mitsubishi's i-MiEV in November. Analysts predict that sales will plunge by at least 1 million units in Western Europe this year compared with 2009 due to a weak economy and a hangover from the last year's scrappage bonus hit sales.
