Auto sales in Japan declined to their lowest in 38 years

2010 Honda FitThe US experienced an auto sales slump the past year that had total annual sales down some 24% from the previous year. But it isn’t only the US carmakers that are hurting as the Japanese auto industry recorded a 38-year low in car sales. In 2009, Japanese consumers held onto their money and saved much of it. As a result, the total auto sales for the year dropped below 3 million for the first time since 1971, according to the Japanese Automotive Dealers Association. In an attempt to help out, the Japanese government offered an incentive program similar to the CARS plan. The incentives only helped sales a bit. When minicars (vehicles with 660 cc or less in displacement) were included in the data, the number totaled 4.6 million units, the lowest in 31 years. That total has dropped below 5 million for the first time since 1978. [source automobile via detnews]
