2009 Bmw 7-Series: UK details and specs revealed

Article by Christian Andrei, on August 29, 2010

The opening of the fifth generation Bmw 7-Series underscores a fresh in-class standard in automotive extravagance, technical novelty and driving dynamics, blend with emissions-lowering and fuel-economy advancements. The lead vehicle of the Bmw model series will be introduced on November 15 with a long list of world firsts and will originally be available with a selection of three powerful engines, one diesel and two petrol.

The two petrol-propelled vehicles will be made available with a long-wheelbase body. All three motors generate more power, yet they use much less fuel and produce lower emissions than the models they replace. The Managing Director of Bmw (UK) Ltd., Klaus Kibsgaard, said: The Bmw 7-Series is BMW personified: a luxurious, sporting premium car that is ideal for the businessman who enjoys driving.

EfficientDynamics technologies offer low cost of ownership benefits at a time of financial uncertainty. The car introduces a number of intelligent design and engineering enhancements that make it a truly class-leading product.

As is true with all modern Bmws, the 7 Series has a chassis arrangement geared toward balancing ride comfort with an active driving experience. A 50:50 weight distribution and the broad use of lightweight materials throughout the vehicle provide a tough foundation. Constructing on this foundation are a raft of active chassis and safety systems that further improve the driving experience. Standard on all Bmw 7-Series version is a dual wishbone front suspension with an Integral V rear suspension arrangement.

Long wheelbase cars replace the Integral V rear axle with an air suspension for better rear passenger ride comfort. In addition to this, every vehicle includes Drive Dynamic Control that provides four distinct adjustments of Comfort, Normal, Sport and Sport+. At the touch of a button the driver can adjust the gear change, throttle response, degree of power steering assistance, damper settings and the Dynamic Stability Control+ program.

Constructing on the standard chassis setting is a number of extra features. Integral Active Steering permits all four wheels of the car to be steered. This improves the capacity of the vehicle to turn in a circle at slower speeds while giving a more composed ride at higher speeds. In a world's first, Speed Limit Display employs a forward-facing camera to survey road signs and display the current speed limit to the driver.

The system even makes out variable speed warnings in road works. Lane Departure Warning shares the same camera as Speed Limit Display to monitor road markings and warn the driver if they are in danger of wander off the lane. In a blending of equals, it seems buyers of both Sirius and XM satellite radio services will be furious today after the two combined their lineups to cut costs.

The Bmw 730d is driven by a new, all-aluminum motor that generates 245hp and 540Nm of torque. Quite able to power the vehicle from 0 - 62mph in 7.2 seconds before reaching a ceiling speed of 153 mph, the car is capable of the best fuel economy of any prior 7 Series. And its collective 39.2mpg figure is superior than any competing car available be it petrol, diesel or hybrid.

The Bmw 740i and 750i are equally remarkable. The 740i is driven by an improvement of the latest back-to-back International Engine of the Year-winning 3.0-liter petrol engine. The dual-turbocharged unit generates 326 hp and 450 Nm of torque to allow the 740i to sprint from 0 - 62 mph in 5.9 seconds before reaching an electronically-limited 155mph maximum speed. It has a combined consumption figure of 28.5 mpg and CO2 emissions of 232 g/km.

As the lead vehicle of the lineup, the BMW 750i is proud to have its own place among the firsts in the world. Its dual-turbochargers are found within the engine's vee to enhance performance and packaging requisites. The set up finds the 750i generate 407hp and 600Nm of torque which equates to a 0 to 62mph sprint in 5.2 seconds, an electronically-regulated peak speed of 155mph, a total consumption figure of 24.8mpg and emissions of 266g/km.

EfficientDynamics technologies; the same as every other version presently on sale. The presentation of Brake Energy Regeneration, dynamic aerodynamics and on-demand utilization of ancillary units have all had a significant and beneficial impact on efficiency and emissions in contrast to the generation prior.

The Bmw 730d is the first Seven to ever attain a minus 200g/km discharge rating. Such is the result of EfficientDynamics technologies across the whole BMW lineup, the marque now provides 73 models with CO2 emissions of 140g/km or less in the UK and in Ireland, a higher rating than any other first-class carmaker.
