The Audi S4 re-enters the US arena in grand fashion, having added all the enhancements that debuted in the B4 A4 sedan, including a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 producing 333 horsepower and 325 lb-ft of torque.
According to Audi USA's website, pricing of the S4 starts at $45,900 (excluding a destination and delivery charge of $825) for the S4 sedan with a six-speed manual transmission.
Pricing for the S4 with Audi's seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch tranny starts a little higher at $47,300. The new S4 is down two cylinders to the previous V8-powered S4 but it is capable to reach 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, about 0.4 seconds faster.
It's also more fuel efficient, achieving 18 mpg city/27 highway compared to the old model's 13 mpg city/20 highway. Audi isn't intending for its S4 to try to get a share of BMW's M3 market segment. Rather, Audi thinks the S4 is a perfect foil for people considering a BMW 335i or Mercedes-Benz C350.
The 335i starts lower at $40,300, but offers an engine that produces only 300 horsepower. The C350, meanwhile, starts lower still at $39,000, but again features a 3.5-liter V6 producing only 268 horsepower.
Audi states that what's remarkable about it is that the S4, despite being more powerful than its cross-country German rivals, is more fuel-efficient than both of them.
The new Audi S4 sedan is also expected to perform better and offer more standard features over its rivals, particularly those made by competing premium carmakers. The new Audi S4 boasts of exclusive standard equipment like unique S4-embossed heated front sport seats, front and rear bumpers and front grille.
Moreover, unique features also include distinct wheels and LED tail lights as well as front xenon headlamps with LED daytime running lights. Also featured as S4-specific elements as standard are rear-biased 40:60 quattro all-wheel drive, heated front sport seats with S4 logo embossing, and 18-inch wheels.
The sedan also features stainless steel and carbon fiber interior trim as well as contrast stitching on steering wheel, shifter and seats. Technological features include Bluetooth, Homelink, SIRIUS satellite radio and iPod Interface.
