The 2010 Mitsubishi Lancer has been chosen as the Top Safety Pick Award for the year due to its good rating for rollover protection. This award marks the first time that a Mitsubishi vehicle gets the recognition since the rollover test was launched.
For the year 2010, this test was deemed to measure the strength of the roof of a vehicle by pushing a metal plate against one corner of a vehicle's roof at a constant speed.
This maximum force that the roof can take before 5 inches of crush is compared to the vehicle's weight to establish the strength to weight ratio.
The IIHS said that to surpass the test vehicles, the vehicles have to prove that they can endure a force equal to at least 4 times the vehicle's weight -- much more than the present federal standard of 1.5 times the vehicle's weight.
The IIHS determined that the 2010 Lancer has the right number and quality of safety features, making it deserve a good rating in front, side, rollover, and rear tests.
Of course, the model features standard electronic stability control, which all vehicles must have to get a good rating.
In an interview, Mitsubishi spokesman Maurice Durand said that the Mitsubishi Lancer tested by the IIHS has the same structure as the Lancer Evolution and Lancer Ralliart, indicating that the Top Safety Pick awarded by the IIHS will apply to them as well.
