Hyundai introduced two new models on the Chinese market at the 2010 Guangzhou International Automobile Exhibition: the mid-size Sonata sedan and the all-new five-door Verna.

The new Verna comes with 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter Gamma engines. The smaller 1.4-liter engine delivers 78.7Kw(108ps) and a maximum torque of 135.4N.m (13.9kg.m), while the 1.6-liter model comes with 90.4Kw(124ps) and 155Nm (15.9kg.m).

Regarding the Sonata model, Hyundai will offer it with a choice of to engines: 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter Theta-II, both mated to a six-speed automatic transmission.

Hyundai hopes to sales more than 700,000 units in China this year, up from 570,000 in 2009, thanks to popular models such as the Yuedong, ix35 and Verna. As you my know already, the Korean manufacturer will also build its third plant in China in order to achieve an annual capacity of 1 million vehicles.

Beijing Hyundai Motor Company President Jae-man Noh revealed that the Sonata is predicted to change the game and shift the landscape of the mid-size sedan market in China much like what it did in the U.S. The Beijing Hyundai is a 50-50 joint venture with Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. and Hyundai Motor.

Noh added that since the Sonata made its debt in the U.S. back in February, it reported fast sales resulting in it being one of the best-selling sedans in the U.S., despite it being a rather competitive segment. The group expected the same success when it enters the Chinese market, he added.

According to Noh, 2010 sales in China for Hyundai are expected to reach 700,000 units, higher compared to the 570,000 units in 2009. One reason for this was popular models like the ix35, Verna, and Yuedong. Once its third plant in China will be finished by 2012, Hyundai is expected to have a 1 million vehicle annual capacity.

Critically acclaimed, the Sonata has a six-speed automatic transmission paired with the 2.0-liter or 2.4-liter Theta-II engines. It also offered convenient features like a welcome function, smart key, and three-piece panoramic sunroof.

The Sonata also had one of the best safety features as it is only one of the two models to have achieved the five-star crash test rating of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s New Car Assessment Program.

The five-door Verna has the 1.4-liter or 1.6-liter Gamma engines. The 1.4-liter engine provided maximum power of 78.7 Kw (108ps) and maximum 135.4 Nm (13.9kg.m) of torque. Fuel economy was at 15.4km/l but with the fuel-economy package, this can go up to 16.1km/l.

The 1.6-liter meanwhile has 90.4Kw (124ps) peak output with top torque of 155 Nm (15.9kg.m). "Tech & Future" was the theme of the Ghangzhou Motor Show. Aside from the five-door Verna and the Sonata, Hyundai showed 19 models which included the BleuOn full-speed EV and Sonata Hybrid. Both demonstrated that the company also has eco-friendly technology to boast about.

Hyundai Sonata Debuts at Guangzhou Show in China

Hyundai Motor Company introduced two new models to the Chinese market at the 8th China (Guangzhou) International Automobile Exhibition: Its best-selling mid-size Sonata sedan and the five-door Verna.

The Sonata has enjoyed critical acclaim and surging sales, thanks to its superb styling, dynamic performance and exceptional value. The five-door Verna ? built exclusively for the Chinese market -- was a natural follow-up to the success of the four-door version, which rolled out in August. Both the Sonata and Verna will be built in Beijing and go on sale as early as January.

"The game-changing, all-new Sonata will shift the landscape of the Chinese mid-size sedan market as it did in the U.S.," said Jae-man Noh, President of Beijing Hyundai Motor Company, a 50-50 joint venture between Hyundai Motor and Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. "Since its debut in the U.S. in February, the Sonata has posted explosive sales, becoming one of the best-selling sedans in a fiercely competitive segment in the U.S. We expect similar success when Sonata hits the Chinese market."

Noh said Hyundai's 2010 sales in China likely will top 700,000 units, up from 570,000 in 2009, thanks to popular models such as the Yuedong, ix35 and Verna. Hyundai will have an annual capacity of 1 million vehicles after its third plant in China is completed in 2012.

The critically acclaimed Sonata comes with 2.0-liter and 2.4-liter Theta-II engines and a six-speed automatic transmission. It sports a range of convenient features, including a three-piece panoramic sunroof, smart key and welcome function. The Sonata also offers best-in-class safety, being only one of two models that received a five-star crash test rating under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration(NHTSA)'s New Car Assessment Program.

The five-door Verna comes with 1.4-liter and 1.6-liter Gamma engines. The 1.4-liter model delivers a peak output of 78.7Kw(108ps) and a maximum torque of 135.4N.m(13.9kg.m). The 1.6-liter model boasts 90.4Kw(124ps) and 155N.m(15.9kg.m).

The 1.4-liter base model Verna achieves fuel economy of 15.4km/ℓ. With the fuel-economy package, mileage rises to 16.1km/ℓ, best in its class.

The theme of the Ghangzhou Motor Show was "Tech & Future." In addition to the new Sonata and Verna five-door, Hyundai showed a total of 19 models, including the Sonata Hybrid and BlueOn full-speed electric vehicle, demonstrating its cutting-edge eco-friendly technology.
