Jaguar revealed today the 2011 XJ Sentinel, the armoured version of the new XJ luxury sports saloon which will make its official debut at the 2010 Moscow International Motor Show. As expected, this new car offers a state-of-the-art armouring package which provides occupants with up to B7 levels of ballistic protection.
It was built using strength steels with Kevlar backing and it is capable to offer protection to B7 level (BS EN 1522 level FB7 and BS EN 1063 BR7), blast protection against 15kg TNT equivalent detonated within close proximity of the vehicle, and substantial under floor grenade protection.
Of course, the weight of the car has been seriously increased, and Jaguar decided to put its most powerful engine available in this baby, the 5.0-litre 385PS AJ-V8 Gen III naturally aspirated direct-injection V8 petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. As a result, the car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 9.7 seconds while the top speed achieved is 195 km/h or 122 mph.
Also, due to the increased weight (3,300 kg), the car features an upgraded Adaptive Dynamics system with continuously variable dampers. In order to stop this monster, Jaguar installed the high performance braking system found on the 510PS Supercharged non-armoured XFR model.
To enhance passive safety, the Sentinel retains full functionality of the standard XJ restraint system, including dual-stage driver and front passenger airbags, side thorax airbags and side curtain airbags. Inside, the car features the same luxurious interior found on the standard car.
The engineers at Jaguar made sure that the armored version of the XJ Sentinel continues to offer supreme luxury plus real-world usability. These are characteristics that are essential to the standard model. Thus, the XJ manages to offer occupant protection with the need to sacrifice practicality or comfort.
XJ has a long wheelbase and with the armoured inner cell being optimized, it ensures that the interior package retains the space while giving the passengers in the rear a one-meter legroom. The style has a modern feel but remains elegant.
The interior uses veneer surfaces and the beautifully-crafted leather, giving the occupants inside an atmosphere that is luxurious, comfortable, and even relaxing. The XJ has a payload of 500 kg considering that it has been maximized by its aluminum and lightweight body structure.
As a result, the XJ Sentinel can accommodate four occupants and their luggage plus any security equipment. Because of this practicality, it can give government organizations, businesses, security forces, or very important persons an appealing yet inconspicuous armored transport.
