Land Rover has launched the new Discovery 4 Armoured, boosting its range of factory-supported armoured vehicles. The Discovery 4 Armoured, which replaces the Discovery 3 model, offers the same renowned all-terrain capability and state-of-the-art protection. However, the new model has upgraded features that lead to higher levels of performance, luxury and style.
The Discovery 4 Armoured is powered by a more powerful 5.0-litre LR-V8 petrol engine compared to the older model. It offers improved passive safety with an airbag restraint system for driver and front passenger, and it also features a more luxurious interior with premium leather seats.
The new model offers discreet armouring and a 500kg payload. The five-seater offers a highly versatile, safe and comfortable transportation.
Discovery 4 Armoured comes with a full three-year, 80,000km factory warranty on the base vehicle and armour, along with comprehensive after-sales support from specialized technicians.
To heighten performance further, the Discovery 4 Armoured has received the new 375PS 5.0-litre LR-V8 direct-injection petrol engine to replace the 2.7-litre V6 turbo-diesel used in the old model. This engine and its responsive six-speed automatic transmission enable the vehicle to accelerate from zero to 100km/h (62mph) in just 10.6 seconds.
While it is hard to tell the Land Rover Discovery 4 Armoured apart from a standard model, this new offering from Land Rover comes with ballistic steel armor and glazing, thereby providing ballistic protection that complies with European standards BS EN1522 level FB6 and BS EN 1063 level BR6, respectively. Land Rover developed the Discovery 4 Armoured in collaboration with Centigon, which specializes in vehicle armoring.
This ballistic steel armor and glazing are strong enough to protect the vehicle from a closely detonated 15kg TNT or equivalent blast power. Moreover, the ballistic steel armor and glazing of the Land Rover Discovery 4 Armoured provide under floor protection against two DM51 hand grenades. This amount of protection has been certified by QinetiQ, an independent blast and ballistic testing organization.
According to John Graham, Commercial Manager Armoured Programs at Land Rover, instead of relying on testing the individual armor components, the carmaker made sure that the entire Land Rover Discovery 4 Armoured is independently certified to B6 standards. Despite the additional weight brought in by the armor, the Land Rover Discovery 4 Armoured still features optimum ride and handling in any road condition, thanks to the wide-ranging engineering modifications implemented.
Moreover, the Land Rover Discovery 4 Armoured has an independent air suspension, uprated air springs and retuned dampers and larger diameter anti-roll bars. It also features heavy duty Alcon disc brakes both on the front and rear.
Not only that, the passive Safety Systems in the Land Rover Discovery 4 Armoured has been greatly enhanced with the installation of driver's steering wheel and passenger fascia dual-stage airbag restraint systems. On the other hand, the Land Rover Discovery 4 Armoured features a functional and comfortable interior with an elevated driving position and a flexible seating layout that could accommodate five people.
Furthermore, the Land Rover Discovery 4 Armoured features a 500-kg payload allowance. The cabin is not only functional and comfortable but also convenient and stylish, thanks to its more sophisticated design with flowing surface treatments. Moreover, the interior of the Land Rover Discovery 4 Armoured now uses premium leather upholstery on the seats as well as real wood veneers.
