2011 Mercedes-Benz S350 BlueTEC receives ECO start/stop function as standard

Mercedes-Benz revealed that ECO Start Stop function will be offered as standard on the S 350 BlueTEC. As a result, the premium eco-friendly saloon now offers an efficiency level that’s higher than ever. This vehicle is powered by the 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine, which delivers 258 hp and 620 Nm of torque.

It also now has a fuel efficiency rating of 6.2 liters per 100 km (37.9 US mpg). In comparison, the powerplant that doesn’t have the new system could only return a fuel efficiency of 6.8 liters per 100 km (34.6 US mpg).

The unit’s BlueTec with AdBlue exhaust treatment enables it to comply with the Euro VI emission standard, with CO2 emissions of only 164 grams per km (compared to the previous figure of 177g/km).

The engine is now lighter by 4.3 kg and its efficiency has been improved by about 3% because it features the TWAS (twin-wire-arc-sprayed) coating technology.

Since 2005, AMG has been using TWAS coating technology in the 6.3-litre V8 in all model series, such as the new SLS. Because of the positive feedback, Mercedes has decided to further develop this technology for diesel engines.

In fact, it will be introduced in the new Mercedes V6 diesel engine, according to a press release from the company. The Mercedes-Benz S 350 BlueTec is priced at EUR76,517.

With the enhanced design, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Saloon manages to display its power and superiority. Characterizing this design is the radiator grille whose arrow shape is now more pronounced.

There is also a new bumper in the front that comes with a subtle light-catching contour and the chrome strip that lies under the cooling air intakes. The brand reveals that for the future, all of the S-Class versions will have their exhaust tailpipes integrated with its rear bumper.

Equipped as standard are the headlamps that carry the bi-xenon technology. A LED Light package is offered which helps this S-Class Saloon get that more dynamic look. This package makes use of LED arrays on the daytime driving lights, market lights, and indicators.

This package though comes in as a standard for the S600 and the S400 Hybrid models. By having this LED Light package, this gives the front end that instantly recognizable day-and-night design. Meanwhile at the rear portion, it is characterized by the tail lights that use an advanced LED design.

Similar to the front, the rear portion utilizes 52 LEDs that shape the double-C form resulting in the distinct light signature. Even in the interior, the brand tries to use more light as part of the style. For future customers of Mercedes-Benz who decide to avail of the ambient lighting, they will get to select from three different lighting moods which are polar (ice-blue), neutral or (white), and solar or (amber).

This lighting though is standard equipment in the S600 and the S400 Hybrid versions. The 2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class will be displayed at this premium brand’s authorized dealer and very own sales outlets. It will be available starting June 2009. Orders are now being accepted.

S-Class news: S 350 BlueTEC now with ECO start/stop function as standard

With immediate effect, Mercedes-Benz is combining the V6 diesel engine in the S 350 BlueTEC with an ECO start/stop function. As a result, the fuel consumption of the luxury class saloon has been brought down to 6.2 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined). The S 350 BlueTEC is also one of the world's cleanest diesel models.

The V6 diesel engine in the S 350 BlueTEC develops an output of 190 kW (258 hp) from a displacement of 2987 cc, and generates 620 Nm of torque. It also comes with excellent fuel consumption and emission values as standard. Thanks to BlueTEC with AdBlue® exhaust treatment, the S-Class model – which made its debut in 2010 – currently already fulfils the emission values planned for 2014 in accordance with the EU6 standard, and as such is one of the world's cleanest diesel vehicles. The new ECO start/stop function fitted as standard now helps to improve the efficiency of the luxury class saloon even further. With a combined consumption of 6.2 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, the S 350 BlueTEC improves on the figures of its predecessor by 0.6 litre, or nine percent. CO2 emissions have dropped from 177 to 164 grammes per kilometre.

The ECO start/stop system developed by Mercedes-Benz switches the engine off when the vehicle comes to a standstill – for example at traffic lights. The engine then immediately starts again as soon as the driver takes his foot off the brake pedal. Thanks to the intelligent control system, all of the vehicle's functions and comfort systems continue to operate during the stop phase.
The increase in efficiency was also achieved, among other things, through the use of TWAS(twin-wire-arc-sprayed) coating technology.

AMG has been using TWAS coating technology since 2005 in the 6.3-litre V8 in all model series, including the new SLS. Based on the positive experiences gained, Mercedes has now also developed this technology further for diesel engines. It is currently being introduced in the new Mercedes V6 diesel engine.

The benefits are impressive. Taking the diesel engine as an example, the potential savings are around 3%. At the same time, the weight has been reduced by 4.3 kg.
The price of the Mercedes-Benz S 350 BlueTEC remains unchanged at 76,517 euros, inclusive of 19% VAT.
