Peugeot is releasing the first new generation full size car that runs on pure electricity. The Peugeot iOn is easy to drive and operate, connected, safe, silent, and comfortable. It also has a number of Peugeot Connect services allowing one to drive around in a different and sustainable way.
This is the car many people have been expecting and waiting for. The brand is also making sure that the iOn will not just cater to the daring adventurers but even to professionals, private individuals, and even public services. In short, people who are willing to take the next step when it comes to the future of mobility.
Society in general is slowly becoming more environmentally aware and with the new energy storage technologies being developed, this means that electric vehicles now have a better chance to be in cities and even in outlying areas. Peugeot has long led the electric vehicle segment especially with the Electric 106s it has sold.
Peugeot iOn is the next step in the brand’s goal of reducing emissions with this purely electric vehicle. Though the iOn is targeted for businesses and public services, it is aimed at private individuals as well.
This makes it ideal whether in the suburbs or the city. Combined with this performance are its unequalled handling, rigorous safety, high comfort level, and sufficient interior space. The advantages do not stop there as the iOn offers silence like never before, amazing driveability, and no CO2 emissions.
Driving the iOn is an entirely new experience as the silent operation makes one experience a new kind of tranquility. There are also no vibrations that can be felt from the powertrain and there is even no need to change gears. Since maximum torque is available anytime, efficient and linear acceleration is possible and thus driving in traffic is simpler.
Under the European standard cycle, the range of the iOn is measured at 150 km. This impressive range is attributed to the energy management system of the lithium-ion battery and the energy recovery system during braking and deceleration.
What this means is that the iOn can cover the daily trip of any consumer considering it is estimated that 90% drive less than 60 km per day. The battery can be charged using a standard household socket and will take 6 hours for a full charge.
By using a special charging unit, it is possible to quick charge the battery allowing merely 15 minutes to reach a 50% charge and 30 minutes for an 80% charge. Since many conventional cars remain standstill about 90% of the time, especially in a semi-urban or urban setting, the amount of time needed to fully charge the battery is just what many drivers are used to. Running costs of the iOn are estimated from €1.50 to €2.00 for every 100 km.
This is true regardless of what recharging mode was used. If the battery recharge was done overnight, or what one may consider as "off-peak hours," it not only lowers the recharging costs downwards but also ensures that the power being provided is optimized.
Peugeot iOn also makes no compromises when it comes to safety. Standard equipment on the iOn includes six air bags. It also has emergency brake assist, electronic brake force distribution, and electronic safety program. Looking at the way the structure of the iOn is designed, it is clear that this car offers the same level of safety like those on standard cars.
While the iOn was still in its design phase, a strong focus was placed not only on the durability of the powertrain’s parts but also on safety. The parts that make up the battery are placed in a hermetically-sealed casing and positioned under the floor of the passenger compartment.
This area is considered as ideal considering that it offers the best protection in the event of an impact since it is highly resistant to deformation. It also lowers the car’s center of gravity and thus enhances its weight distribution. As mentioned earlier, the battery can be recharged through a special connecting cable using a standard electrical socket or a special quick charge unit.
Either way, they are controlled and monitored based on the parameters of each off the individual battery cells. Aside from being equipped with the latest electric technology, the iOn integrates many of the newer telematics technologies that deliver Peugeot Connect services.
All of the iOn will have as standard and for an unlimited period the Peugeot Connect services, which include that Peugeot Connect Assistance and Peugeot Connect SOS. Whether the SOS button has been pressed or any of the safety items have been activated, the occupants are automatically connected to an emergency call center.
With the Peugeot Connect Assistance, simply pushing the "Peugeot Lion" button will immediately connect one to a helpline. Since the precise and actual location of the car can be determined immediately as well, repair services or emergency units can go to the area at once.
