2011 Skoda Yeti receives two “4x4 of the Year” awards

Article by Christian Andrei, on December 21, 2011

ŠKODA celebrates as the Yeti garnered two end-of-year awards from 4x4 Magazine, a respected specialist off-road magazine, bringing the SUV's trophy haul to six for the year. Specifically, the Yeti scooped class wins in the magazine's "4x4 of the Year" test, ranking the Yeti as number one in the Mid-Range class.

Last year, the ŠKODA Yeti obtained class honor in the Crossover category, and it took the overall "4x4 of the Year" title as well. Editor Nigel Fryatt commented that the automobile is an "impressive machine" when taking "value for money" and "fit for purpose" in consideration.

He added that the vehicle with the full off-road electronic terrain options is "more than capable" of coping with conditions that are beyond what potential owners would likely attempt.

The Yeti was also given the magazine's Special Award for Best Value. Editor Alan Kidd related that last year, the Yeti took the judging panel by surprise.

This year, Kidd said that the Yeti still took their breath away despite being ready for it. He further stated that the Yeti is "brilliantly conceived and superbly built" as well as "good to drive on the road." He also said that the automobile will "do remarkable things in the rough."

With just two weeks of trading before 2011 ends, sales of the ŠKODA Yeti will be close to 5,500 units, an increase of around 33 percent from last year's 4,100 total.

With more than one hundred years of automotive experience, Skoda once again brings a new powerful breed of vehicle with the new Skoda Yeti compact 5-door FWD SUV. This amazing off-roader features 180mm ground clearance plus an ample luggage and passenger environment on the inside.

Based on the myth, a Yeti is always ready to lend a helping hand to lost travellers on top of the snowy mountains. From what we see, the new model is designed to endure all types of weather and road conditions. The only twist to the story we think is that the Skoda Yeti can withstand warmer climates or even the most difficult challenge involving off-road or high terrain driving.

It only makes sense why Skoda came up with this idea and applied the same context to a vehicle. And for that, Skoda Auto is proud to present the Yeti, its newest model inspired by an imaginary snow creature that remains a legend up to this day.

As we look back at Skoda’s very interesting timeline, the Yeti shares the same uncompromised driving features found on the old Skoda Superb 3000 model. This prototype was born from the year 1942-1943 bearing the Kfz 15, type 956 saloon’s 3.1 L, 6-cylinder engine and 4-wheel drive. It is then succeeded by yet another off-road model (type 973) in 1952-1956. The latter boasts of 600mm wading depth with 85% climbing capability and outstanding road handling.

The Yeti is the 5th instalment amongst Skoda’s greatest off-road segments in history. The latest model now features the most impressive towing capability, high load capacity and all-around spaciousness you won’t find anywhere else. That, along with its exceptional handling, driving comfort and amazing off-road performance, makes the Yeti the most remarkable off-roader in its class.

True enough, the Skoda Yeti has been developed with the mythical creature’s tough and high enduring characteristics. So that’s probably what makes it deservedly legendary. Needless to say, we are amazed how the designers have combined all the excellent qualities rarely found in just one type of vehicle.
