2011 Vw Polo GTI: full details and specs revealed

Article by Christian A., on August 26, 2010

The Polo GTI makes a strong comeback. This GTI boasts to have 132 kW / 180 PS and it has superior handling properties unified with uncompromising engine dynamics and a maximum of safety. The high-tech features don't just end there. The 2011 Polo GTI is powered by a new 1.4-liter TSI with petrol direct injection plus turbo- and supercharging.

A 7-speed DSG, which transfers power to the front wheels, is standard equipment. The tendency to understeer is reduced due to an electronic transverse differential lock (XDS). Handling is also improved, especially when quickly driving through curves.

The Volkswagen Polo GTI is offered in either a three-door or a five-door version. This car is extremely agile and extremely efficient. The Polo GTI, which weighs 1,194 kg, is able to accelerate to 100 km/h in only 6.9 seconds and has a top speed of 229 km/h.

One fact that makes this Polo GTI extraordinary is that along with its performance features, it is the most fuel-efficient and lowest emitting GTI ever.

It has a combined fuel consumption of 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers. This is equivalent to CO2 emissions of only 139 g/km. By comparison, its direct predecessor, which was also equipped with a 180 PS 1.8-litre turbo engine, consumed 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers (equivalent to 188 g/km CO2).

This makes the new car about 25% more fuel-efficient. The GTI is also the first Polo to be available with bi-xenon headlights including cornering light, LED daytime running light and corner marker light as well as a panoramic tilt/slide sunroof.

Aesthetically, the Volkswagen Polo was improved 1:1 from the design code or DNA of the new Volkswagen. The Scirocco, the pioneer version of this roster, was made to run in the races in 2008 to take its post among the best cars in the world. Currently this coupé keeps its worth more steadily compared to other vehicles in Germany. The second batch of the new DNA was also released in 2008 in the new Volkswagen

Golf and its brother which features a high roof, the Volkswagen Golf Plus. These variants have achieved top rankings from consumers ever since, a truth stemming from statistics based on car registration. Soon a third model will be launched and is based on the Volkswagen Design DNA, called the Polo.

Team of designers, development engineers, and production experts

A prerequisite for developing this design idea, which is branded by utmost accuracy and clarity, is the use of advanced production methods. Development engineers, designers, and manufacturing experts at Volkswagen collaborated more closely than usual. Their aim was to make a top level of quality, both visually and technically, that is usually found in vehicles that are a number of classes higher.

This partnership was created with huge success in the previous two years by a core team under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn. This team is made up of experts in the field like Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg (Member of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Brand; Development), Prof. Dr. Jochem Heizmann (Member of the Board of Management, Volkswagen Group; Production), and Walter de Silva (Head of Group Design) who put together their innovative skills to produce and design vehicles like the all-new Volkswagen Polo.

Design and dimensions

Consumers can thank Walter de Silva for the new design DNA, the aura that the Volkswagen Polo exudes – in comparison to a lot of other autos in the so-called supermini class or A0 – for not striving to be cute, but for being totally mature in every aspect.
