2012 3-Series sedan to widen Bmw’s lead over Audi and its aging A4

Article by Christian A., on October 14, 2011

As you may know already, Bmw will unveil later today the redesigned 3-Series sedan and as expected, these are some bad news for its main rival Audi and its aging A4. Why? Well, it’s simple as the new vehicle will hit the dealerships in early 2012, two years before Audi redesigns the A4.

And the bad news continue for Audi, as the revamped 3-Series sedan will help Bmw increase its lead over Audi with 43% in 2012 according to an IHS Automotive forecast.

The forecast is based on the fact that the 3-Series and 1-Series accounted for 49 percent of BMW's sales last year. Now, Bmw redesigned both models. "The 3 series renewal improves sales volumes and pricing power, creating an immense margin advantage," said Stefan Bauknecht, a DWS Investment fund manager in Frankfurt.

Bmw also made a smart move with the new 3-Series as the new car will adopt parts and technology from the 1-Series and 5-Series to lower production and development costs. Same IHS Automotive expects 3-Series sale to increase 22 percent to 448,600 cars next year, in order to boost firm’s deliveries 9.3 percent to 1.47 million.

All this time, the BMW 3-Series compact sedan has come to represent the brand’s sporting competence, dynamics and aesthetics appeal. Now on its 6th generation, the always-evolving BMW sports segment is more elegant and dynamic than ever.

The best-selling midsize sedan now has the new-improved dimensions that draw the line from the previous generation. What’s so good about this change however is that the new model embodies the same elegance and sportiness that are known with this type of model.

Just like before, the new premium car has preserved BMW’s so-called “dynamic proportions”. These are the basic design of the windshield, side windows and rear windows, the typically long wheelbase and short front overhang as well as the usual sweeping bonnet.

The new generation BMW 3 Series is built with a much wider track. The front and rear measure +37/47mm, giving emphasis to the sporty form of the luxury car. The different aspects around the body (particularly at the front) leave a lasting impression of strength and stability.

We can’t deny the fact that the latest BMW sedan is sporting an unmistakable new appearance. Check out the new wider stance and slightly protruding kidney grille and you will know exactly what these changes are all about. One thing is for sure though; the front-end’s main focal point goes to the grille with stunning surrounding elements. Meanwhile, the lower-slung bumper and heavily-lined bonnet add more drama to the already intense new look.

The lighting system offers the Xenon twin headlights with brow-shaped LED accents and corona rings. These are positioned extensively at the kidney grille to give out the broader impression on the latest model. Unlike before, the new BMW 3-Series not only come with one air intake at the centre but two larger ones under each headlight.

This new pair of air intakes is placed around the outer edge, which also has the smaller vertical intakes within the main ducts. This “Air Curtain” technology promotes better airflow for the front wheels in order to deliver efficient aerodynamics and lesser fuel consumption particularly when taking the car out for a speedy drive.
