Priced from 40,850 euros, the 2012 Audi A6 Avant will be available with a choice of six engines: two gasoline engines and four diesel units. Five of these engines use forced induction in order to keep the displacement low.
According to Audi, the most fuel-efficient diesel engine is the forced induction forced induction which needs just 5.0 liters of fuel per 100 km (47.04 US mpg), corresponding to CO2 emissions of 132 g per km (212.43 g/mile).
The popular 3.0-liter TDI engine is available in three variants: with 150 kW (204 hp); with 180 kW (245 hp) and the top version with 230 kW (313 hp). When the 3.0 TDI engine delivers 313 hp, the 2012 A6 Avant can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.4 seconds (preliminary value) and has a top speed limited to 250 km/h (155.34 mph).
The 2.8 FSI engine delivers 150 kW (204 hp), while the supercharged 3.0 TFSI produces 220 kW (300 hp). The Audi A6 Avant measures 4.93 meters (16.17 ft) in length and 1.87 meters (6.14 ft) in width, but only 1.46 meters (4.79 ft) in height. Its wheelbase has grown to 2.91 meters (9.55 ft) – a big gain over the previous model.
Regarding the design, the front end of the carries the same design seen on the sedan version, while the rear end is completely new. The luggage compartment has a capacity of up to 1,680 liters (59.33 cu ft).
The interior of the car features a sleek and clear design and some of the high-end options are the head-up display, adaptive light with variable headlight range control, front seats with ventilation and massage function, and numerous infotainment components. Moreover, the 2012 A6 Avant offers the MMI navigation plus and the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System. The parking system plus with 360° display, which is a new assistance system at Audi, will follow somewhat later.
What is impressive about the A6 Avant is that when it comes to its control concept, it is not only logical but is also very easy to comprehend. This is not surprising considering that all models that Audi has released have the same quality. A good example of this is that all of its instruments are clearly labelled. There is a display in the middle but it can be controlled within its steering wheel. At the center of this instrument panel, there is a second monitor available, which is retractable.
This is actually a component of its MMI radio control system. Audi however is offering as an option a driver information system with the choice to have a 5-inch monitor or a 7-inch version. Other standard features equipped include the brand’s very own and advanced pre sense basic safety system, light and rain sensors, cruise control, and the electromechanical parking brake. Also standard is the automatic air conditioning system, though there is the option to have it with the four-zone controls.
Accessible as an option as well is the heads-up display. What this does is provide vital data to the driver by displaying it on the windshield, but in color. Needless to say, the onboard computer is sure to entice anyone. In line with the control concept, starting the engine only needs a button being pushed. In terms of the design for the A6 Avant’s interior, it utilizes a decorative inlay that is called as wrap-around.
What the design does is to enclose not just the driver but the passenger in the front as well. As such, the front part of its instrument panel has been stylishly curved. In addition, the interior has been designed in a way that it matches the exterior’s light style. Aside from the abundant space for the passengers offered in the back seat, there are various storage choices. There are even cup holders on both the front and the rear seats.
There is even a storage package being offered. Overall, this gives that interior that functional and high-quality feel to it. Without a doubt, every tiny detail in the interior has clearly passed the most demanding of quality standards Audi has. Even the choice of material was not left to chance as all of them have been chosen and then worked with extra attention. While the decorative inlay comes in aluminum, it will also be offered with the selection of the three different types of wood, one of which is the innovative and contemporary veneer that uses layers of alternating light oak and dark oak. Rounding up all of these options is the piano lacquer variant.
The colors used in the interior are able to complement the materials, which include a wide variety of leather and even exclusively have the natural grade Valcona. When it comes to the front seats, Audi will be showing customers a wide array of choices that are sporty, that offer comfort, and these may comprise even the top-of-the-line ones that have a massage function as well as a ventilation function.
For those who want the interior to be immersed in a sensational but subtle light, all that needs to be done is choose between the ambient lighting package and the optional lighting package. Even the steering wheel was not spared. There is choice between a 3-spoke version and a 4-spoke type. It is even possible to have the heated rim or power-adjustable steering column. For those who prefer an automatic transmission, they can choose to have the paddles in the steering wheel.
