During a special event at the Humboldt Box in Berlin on May 18, Audi is expected to unveil the Avant variant of the A6. The introduction will also be broadcast online. Only five months have passed since Audi introduced the new A6 five-door saloon version at the 2011 NAIAS in Detroit. It signifies just how far technology has gone. Car development used to take about 10 years and took the time of most of its development divisions.
There are no upcoming automotive events so the new A6 Avant is bound to get the full attention of the automotive press. The same range of market-dependent four-cylinders and V6 petrols and diesels is expected to be available. A hybrid version is reportedly already in the works.
Those who decide to buy the saloon version can choose from five engines. Audi asserted that the fuel consumption throughout the range is lower by up to 19% compared to the previous model.
There are two options for the petrol range. The first is a 2.8-liter V6 that delivers 204hp and 280 Nm (206.52 lb-ft) of torque. The other one is a 3.0-liter TFSI V6 that has an output of 300 hp and 440 Nm (324.53 lb-ft). However, it’s expected that most of those who buy the Avant will choose a diesel engine, primarily the 3.0-liter TDI V6 that generates either 204 hp or 245 hp.
With the A6 Avant, Audi again leads the pack as it sets new trends for the business class. Having a lightweight body with a host of new innovations, without a doubt this seventh generation model hopes to write the next chapter that is the history of success of this model series. Since it is 4.93 meters long, around 16.17 feet, it gives the impression that it is agile. Overall however, its proportions give it a sporty appearance with the roof line being low and flowing to the flat D-pillars. Being offered as an option are the rear lights and the LED headlights, both of which have a visual and a technical function. A key feature of the A6 Avant is that it has a low weight, attributed to the use of aluminum components that compose about 20% of its body. Though Audi has long been known as the world leader when it comes to lightweight construction, the release of the new A6 Avant shows that it has once again raised that level.
By using aluminum, the gross weight of the new model, when compared to the previous one, is lower by 70 kilograms, about 154.32 pounds. Curb weight meanwhile is at 1,640 kg, around 3,615.58 lb. In terms of cargo space, the capacity of the luggage compartment is 565 liters (19.95 cu. ft.). However when the rear seat backs are folded, this increases that space to almost triple at 1,680 liters (3,615.58 lb.). Aside from the large amount of space, the brand is offering as an option a host of stylish features like the automatic and gesture-controlled rear hatch. This is in fact a combination of a convenience key and the power hatch of a luggage compartment.
Through a specific action done just below its rear bumper, the system is activated which then opens the hatch. When it comes to the power unit, Audi did not skimp customers as it is offering them a selection totaling six engines, four TDI and two gas ones, and all having direct fuel injection. Power of these engine is from 130 kW (177 hp) and up to 230 kW (313 hp), which is then combined with innovative efficiency. Take for instance the 2.0-liter TDI unit, fuel consumption is merely at 47.04 US mpg or about 5.0 liters for every 100 km. In fact, all of the engines show that fuel consumption is lower by 18% when compared to previous models and this is because of the use of the brand’s own modular efficiency platform.
Each of the engines though, depending on the type, will be paired with different transmissions that include the continuously variable multi-tronic version, the six-speed manual type, the S-tronic seven-speed, or the tiptronic eight-speed version. Offered as an option as well is not just the front-wheel drive but also the permanent quattro all-wheel drive. For those who want the power to be distributed efficiently to its rear wheels, there is the sport differential option. It is not only the engine that provides the highlight to the new A6 Avant but the chassis as well. While it is indeed cutting-edge, it manages to mix outstanding comfort with athletic dynamics.
Equipped as standard is the drive select driving dynamics system while the electromechanical power steering is truly efficient. For those who decide to have the front-wheel-drive, it will come with the electronic stabilization program and since it has the limited slip differential that is electronically controlled, it results in more precise handling. Another option being made available is the adaptive air suspension with the dynamic steering being made available in the near future.
The interior continues with what is observed in the exterior. The design continues to be smooth and the exceptional workmanship is evident. Also on the inside are the perfect ergonomics and the lavish appointments. There are indeed a number of luxurious options inside like the adaptive light that comes with a variable headlight range control and the head-up display. The front seats are plush as well as it has not only a ventilation function but massage functions as well. There are also various top-of-the-line infotainment components like the MMI navigation system, which is hard drive-based, and for those who want to enjoy music, the Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System.
