It has only been a few weeks since the new BMW 1 Series was launched but already, it has won its first international award. "Auto Bild" and "Bild am Sonntag" gave this edition of the BMW compact model the “Golden Steering Wheel” award. The trophy was presented to BMW AG Board Chairman Dr. Norbert Reithofer at a gala event in Berlin. The BMW 1 Series won in the category of compact automobiles.
The new BMW 6 Series Convertible is the second BMW model to contend for the "Golden Steering Wheel.” It had also taken second place in the category of open-top vehicles. This is the 36th year that the “Golden Steering Wheel” award has been given.
It is considered one of the most significant and tradition-steeped automobile awards in Europe. The award goes to the newly launched models that have impressed the most in that year. For the current year, 46 new models were considered in the numerous segments.
Readers were asked to vote for what they think is the best model in each class. Around 260,000 readers of the automobile magazine group "Auto Bild" and the Sunday newspaper "Bild am Sonntag" participated in the poll. There was also the verdict of a 42-member jury consisting of racing drivers, engineers, editors and celebrity testers.
The new BMW 1 Series topped both the readers’ vote and the jury's verdict in this compact vehicle category. It blew away its rivals with its excellent sporty style and efficiency, optimized comfort and bigger space, expressive design and top quality.
After the award ceremony, Dr. Norbert Reithofer said that the new BMW 1 Series’ success proves that it is “doing excellently in this segment, too." This is the second time that BMW won the "Golden Steering Wheel" for a compact model. The first time was in 2008 when the BMW 1 Series Coupé won the award.
The second generation of the BMW 1-Series will try to build on the reputation of the premium compact for providing driving pleasure by offering innovative engine and suspension technology, more premium space and state-of-the-art features and equipment. Moreover, the second-generation rear-wheel-drive BMW 1-Series still boasts of superior handling and design as well as premium image and is now more fuel efficient than its predecessor.
In addition, second-generation BMW 1-Series now offers a more refined blend of sportiness and driving comfort as well as enhanced functionality. In addition, the new BMW 1-Series is laden with a number of driver assistance systems that until now were only seen in vehicles belonging to higher segments. Compared to the first generation, the newest iteration of the BMW 1-Series is around 85 mm longer (at 4,324 mm) and around 17 mm wider (at 1,765 mm), although it is as tall (at 1,421 mm).
Its track was widened on the front (plus 51 mm) and on the rear (plus 72 mm), while its wheelbase was also widened by 30 mm to 2,690 mm. These dimensions allowed the second-generation BMW 1-Series to offer more legroom in the rear passenger cabin (plus 21 mm) and more cargo capacity in the luggage compartment (plus 30 liters to 360 liters).
Along with these larger dimensions, the new BMW 1-Series comes with a design that dynamically expresses its fresh yet elegant image. This is evident with the car’s precision-molded body surfaces as well as a contemporary yet functional interior. The BMW 1-Series could be further personalized with two packages of interior and exterior design features and equipment: the BMW Sport Line and BMW Urban Line.
