Eight months after the launch of the 3-Series Sedan (F30), Bmw unveiled the all-new 3-Series Touring (F31) and announced that the new car will also be offered in the United States… next year! The Bmw 3-Series Touring (F31) received 97 millimetres to the overall length and 50 millimetres to its wheelbase and as a result it will offer extra room for passengers and luggage alike.
A 35-litre increase in capacity (to 495 litres) means the load compartment can offer more space. Just like the sedan, the new 3-Series Touring will be available with three equipment packages: Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line. At the beginning the new vehicle will be available with three engines: the new four-cylinder petrol unit, the six-cylinder diesel engine and the revised 2-litre diesel. The new 2.0-liter four-cylinder petrol engine delivers 180 kW/245 hp, while the 2.0-liter diesel engine has a total output of 135 kW/184 hp.
The most powerful version is the 3.0-liter diesel engine producing 190 kW/ 258 hp. The 328i Touring sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 6.0 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).
The fuel consumption of this model is only 6.8 litres per 100 kilometres (41.5 mpg). The BMW 330d Touring sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.6 seconds all the way to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Fuel consumption is 5.1 litres per 100 kilometres (55.4 mpg) in the EU test cycle. The BMW 320d Touring hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.7 seconds and has a top speed of 230 km/h (143 mph).
In order to improve the fuel consumption, the new Bmw 3-Series Touring comes with Auto Start-Stop function, Brake Energy Regeneration, Optimum Shift Indicator and on-demand operation of ancillary components.
The interior features the all-new full-colour Head-Up Display capable to project key information onto the windscreen in sharp resolution. Moreover, the vehicle offers numerous Bluetooth office functions for internet-based services. The Apps option and the free BMW Connected app provide a gateway to services such as social networks, web radio and the iPhone calendar function.
The brand new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon once again highlights a rear window that can be opened separately right from the tailgate. A button on the wiper arm at the rear window can electrically unlock the window and open it by hand. This function allows items to be loaded or unloaded easily – more importantly when space is much needed, as instead of opening out, the window at the rear opens upward.
To start a new trend, a power tailgate will be available on a 3 Series Sports Wagon to gain easier access to its spacious cargo area. A touch of a button can take you to the cargo area, with a choice from the inside of the car or using a remote key. Comfort Access is also offered which makes it a lot easier since it comes with the Hands Free Opening Tailgate. To open the tailgate of the new 3 Series Sports Wagon automatically even without both hands, one just needs to put a foot under the rear bumper.
All-new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon is ultimately flexible. A net and an added strap in the side panel at the right can also be used to secure cargo. Four tie-downs are installed in the cargo floor. A net on the panel on the left is also built-in. Two coat hooks plus a 12-volt outlet give additional flexibility. To accommodate smaller load, a storage tray below the compartment floor plus a stowage compartment deep enough to store more items are available.
Another cool feature is that the cover of the luggage compartment can be stowed below the load compartment floor, keeping it out of sight when it is not being used. Another typical feature is a partition net installed separately, which can be used in various ways even if the backseats are folded.
The backseats can be folded in three different levels—at 40, 20, and another 20. The huge through-loading feature gives the new Sports Wagon the capability to accommodate four people and longer items to load like snowboards or skis, all at the same time.
