The most frugal and lowest-emissions diesel in BMW’s 5-Series range has been launched in the UK. With a CO2 emissions rating of only 119 grams per 100 km., this right hand drive 520d EfficientDynamics could become one of the leaders on the market when it comes to executive company cars. The BMW 5 Series has become very successful with almost 6,000,000 models sold in the last 40 years.
The BMW 5 Series, which is currently in its sixth iteration, has been improved by being available with a class-leading diesel engine that offers better emissions and fuel consumption figures.
But the vehicle still provides the awesome driving experience that could be expected from the marquee. The 520d EfficientDynamics is powered by the same efficient 2.0-liter turbocharged diesel that has an output of 184hp.
With the launching of Auto Start-Stop, an eight-speed automatic transmission as well as a double-wishbone front suspension, the saloon could now accelerate from zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 8.2 seconds. It also has a combined efficiency of 62.8 mpg in Britain. It has a recommended retail price of £30,435, but it could go as high as £37,065 when it is fitted with extra trim, automatic air conditioning and other features.
The proportions of new BMW 5-Series Sedan – its long wheelbase and hood, aft-set greenhouse, the coupe-like flowing roofline and short overhangs – are typical of vehicles created by the German premium carmaker. The sedan also features a slightly wedging body that lends it with an athletic forward-moving character.
Moreover, the sedan’s dynamic looks – when viewed in profile – are further augmented by a reinterpretation of BMW's signature Hofmeister kink at the bottom of the C-pillar.
All engine versions of the BMW 5-Series boast of near-perfect front-to-rear weight distribution, as implied by its well-balanced silhouette. The BMW 5-Series is laden with smooth flowing lines running from the front along the side to the rear.
Its appealing front, sleek sides and strong rear are further emphasized by its long wheelbase that measures 116.9 inches (2.97 meters). Its front end, meanwhile, is defined by an upright BMW kidney grille, featuring some seemingly leaning-forward angles. Along with its dynamically flared wheel arches, this kidney grille lends the new BMW 5-Series Sedan with an imposing and charismatic front end.
The new BMW 5-Series Sedan is specified with the BMW Adaptive Xenon headlights -- optional on 528i – as well as daytime running lights with distinctive LED corona rings.
These lamp units also include direction indicators – now moved far to the outside – each made up of 10 LED units. In addition, the upper edge of each headlight unit is marked by a LED focus light. On the other hand, the passenger cell appears longer than it actually is thanks to the sedan’s slightly flared shoulder surface, coupe-like roofline and stretched window surface.
The lower section of the body is marked by concave surfaces that allow for a strong interplay of line. In addition, the rear-wheel drive nature of the new BMW 5-Series Sedan is strongly indicated by the greater curvature of its rear wheel arches.
