Mass production of Honda's New Civic has begun as normal operations resume at its Honda of the UK Manufacturing Ltd (HUM) vehicle facility in Swindon. This will create 500 new jobs in order to achieve the forecasted production increase in 2012. Manabu Nishimae, Honda Motor Europe President, said the car manufacturer continues with its commitment to manufacture engines and vehicles in Europe with Swindon at the heart of its European manufacturing operations.
This commitment is further demonstrated with the launch of the New Civic. Furthermore, he stated that Honda in Europe had turned a corner with a considerable production increase estimated next year.
With the 500 additional jobs, HUM Director Andy Piatek disclosed that Car Plant 2 would resume its two-shift operation in the late spring of 2012. The new jobs will add to the current 3,000 associates. Recruitment will begin immediately through hondamanufacturingcareers.co.uk, which is HUM's dedicated website.
In a speech to the company's associates, Nishimae acknowledged the flexibility of the employees, stating that the past three years have been "difficult" for the company's European operations.
The Civic from Honda is considered as one of its most well-recognized, if not most popular, products. With the new 2012 Civic, Honda will be releasing the ninth generation version of this popular range. Since its first release, the Civic has been known to be a compact that is fun-to-drive while at the same time being stylish, athletic, durable, and fuel efficient.
It is no wonder that the Civic has not only become a darling of the global transportation family, but also one of its most reliable as well. From its first release as a 1973 model and all the way to 2010, it is estimated that this model has reached, in the U.S. alone, around 8.8 million customers. Again this is no surprise as customers who choose the Civic come from a wide range of drivers.
These can be families that have young children, students that have recently finished high school, or even college students that are just starting their lives. It can even come from different professions like performance enthusiasts, environmentalist, and schoolteachers. Even soccer moms have taken a liking to the Civic. It also crosses generations as it can be retirees, baby boomers, and Generation Y. Location also varies as customers can come from the Midwest, Sunbelt states, Snow Belt state, and even as far as Alaska and Hawaii.
Despite all of these differences, what binds them all is that they are all young at heart. The reason being is that despite the various qualities it offers like comfort, durability, economy, safety, and style, the Civic remains to be a vehicle that one can have fun driving in. Another reason for the success of the Civic is that for each generation, it has been developed with a specific theme.
For the new 2012 Civic, it follows the basic idea of a unique and futuristic compact. With this, Honda hopes to introduce new values that go beyond the needs of the present while putting the experience of what the Civic is to a higher level.
Examples of the changes for the 2012 Civic include better fuel economy for all models plus interactive technologies aimed for convenience and customization added in. Improved as well are the interior packaging, the ride, and performance.
He further stated that despite the many challenges such as the economic downturn and the natural disasters in Japan and in Thailand, the associates have "remained committed." Moreover, he expressed that he is "extremely proud" of how the associates have responded to the challenges. "We will build upon our new found strength and remain confident of our ability to achieve and succeed in the future," Nishimae said.
