2012 Dodge Avenger R/T: official details, photos and specs

Chrysler unveiled today the all-new 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T, its latest addition set to make its official debut on April 20 at the 2011 New York International Auto Show. As expected, the 2012 Avenger R/T is powered by the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, delivering 283 hp, mated to a six-speed automatic transaxle.

According to the manufacturer, the car has an EPA fuel economy rating of 19 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

Moreover, the car also comes with unique exterior design elements such as unique body-color grille with the Dodge badge, menacing black headlamp background, the “war paint” R/T decal on the front quarter panel as well as 18-inch painted aluminum wheels.

The suspension of the 2012 Dodge Avenger R/T comes with a tuned suspension as the engineers increased roll stiffness by 18 percent, and spring rates by 17 percent in the front and more than 12 percent in the rear.

Inside, the sporty theme is continued with distinctive Aunde fabric with Z stripe fabric inserts, red stitching and aggressive leather-trimmed bolsters. The front seats are heated and feature “R/T” graphic stitched in red on the front headrests.

The same “R/T” graphic can be found on the tachometer. Regarding the sound system, Chrysler mounted a Boston Acoustic sound system mated to the standard 276-watt touchscreen entertainment center with a 30-gigabyte hard drive.

Exterior Design

For the Avenger to remain true to the DNA of Dodge R/T, engineers tuned its suspension to the R/T model, in particular. They increased the roll stiffness by 18% as well as spring rates by 17% and 12% in the front and rear, respectively. Front strut damping rates are raised by 15%, rear strut damping rates increased by nearly 20% while the rear stabilizer diameter is made larger by 2 mm, from 19 mm to 21 mm.

The changes in suspension lead to a vigorous performance sedan driving experience. It has class-leading 283 hp and continues to deliver 29 miles per gallon along the highway, making the Dodge Avenger R/T unmatched in its class.

The exterior of the Avenger R/T model comes with unique design elements consisting of a distinct body-color grille plus the brand’s badge, an intimidating black headlamp background, 18-inch painted aluminum wheels and "war paint" R/T decal found on the front quarter panel. The performance elements are carried over to the rear with a spoiler and "R/T" badge.

Interior Design

The interior of the Avenger R/T model features Aunde fabric that has red stitching and Z stripe fabric inserts plus aggressive bolsters with leather trimming that firmly secure the driver and passengers to their seats when they test drive the Avenger. It has heated front seats and "R/T" graphic with red stitching on headrests in front.

Drivers will see a cockpit that is different from other Avenger models. It includes a distinct gauge cluster that has a tachometer mounted at the center with the "R/T" graphic as well as accelerator pedal pads and an SRT-inspired brake.

The steering wheel is covered with perforated leather stitching with red accents. The standard 276-watt touchscreen entertainment center that includes a 30-gigabyte hard drive is matched with a Boston Acoustic sound system. The Dodge Avenger R/T model comes standard with the outstanding sound system plus remote start, among other features.

This mid-size sedan is a top pick of the 2011 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and provides customers with several high-tech safety features designed to let drivers keep their eyes on the road and hands on the steering wheel.
