Ford set out to use all the fuel-saving technologies it could in one model in hopes of creating a vehicle that consumes the least amount of fuel. So there is a big interest in what Ford will introduce at the Amsterdam Motor Show -- the ECOnetic version of the new Focus. Ford claims that this model will set a new industry record in the compact segment for fuel efficiency.
According to the official details that Ford has recently released, this new model features a 1.6l Duratorq TDCi diesel engine that returns a fuel efficiency rating -- 3.5l of diesel per 100 kilometers (or about 80 mpg) – which is comparable to a hybrid. The ECOnetic model features technologies such as Auto-Start-Stop, Smart Regenerative Charging, Ford Eco Mode, 6-speed Durashift manual transmission and Shift Indicator Light.
Ford designed a special group of revisions for the body that’s intended to reduce drag and raise efficiency. Ford also added undershields and deflectors to cover the majority of the underfloor between the front and the rear axle. It also steel wheels that have been fitted with special low-drag ECOnetic wheel covers and Active Grille Shutter.
When the ECOnetic version of the new Focus arrives in the market in 2012, it will be available in five-door or wagon versions. Those models that will be offered for the European market will be built in Saarlouis, Germany. Pricing details are not available yet.
Exceptional Streamlining Package
The all-new Ford Focus is already recognised for having outstanding streamlining with a CD of 0.295 for the standard five-door version. The ECOnetic version takes it a step further with exclusive features that make it even more streamlined. One of the main improvements of this model is with the airflow under the car, which is now augmented with deflectors and undershields.
Further reduction of air resistance was achieved with the new ECOnetic wheel covers, which has a more aerodynamic shape compared to ordinary alloy wheels.
A new Active Grille Shutter is also seen on all ECOnetic units. This is basically a front grille with redesigned vents to regulate and smoothen airflow for the engine cooling system. The vents may open or close depending on the cooling system’s airflow requirement. When the vents are completely shut, drag is thus further minimised, resulting in two percent less CO2 emissions.
Ford ECOnetic Emission-reducing Technologies
True to its name, the Focus ECOnetic completely features all emission-lowering Ford ECOnetic Technologies, just as in the other Focus variants. These are the Ford Eco Mode, Ford Auto-start-stop, Shift Indicator Light and Smart Regenerative Charging.
